England changes

International Tests England

There has been so much noise because of the loss at Headingley it is enough to make your head spin.

Firstly recalling Collingwood is not going to help anyone and if the selectors were going to replace Broad with him they need to look elsewhere for employment as they would prove again to be grossly incompetent

If Broad is to be dropped there needs to be a good reason behind it, he scored more runs then anyone else at Headingley and in 2008 has scored 369 runs @ 46.13.

This is kind of an accident however as he was never selected to score runs but score runs he has and although he is struggling to take wickets I feel his fortune will change as he has been very unlucky with so many edges dropping just short or wide of fielders, dropped catches and so on so his fortunes will change.

The fact is Broad has batted better this year then a lot of our proper batsman.

Broad: 369 runs @ 46.13
Collingwood: 283 runs @ 28.30
Cook: 368 runs @ 33.45
Vaughan: 325 runs : 29.55
Ambrose: 278 runs @ 27.80

Simply put you can not drop Broad and in actual fact he should be moved up to 6 in the batting order and try to encourage him to become an all rounder and he certainly looks the part.

Flintoff is not a problem coming in at 7 or 8 but Ambrose looks just terrible so I would bring in either Foster or Read both are world class wicket keepers and although both can bat, Read’s batting for one has improved in a big way over the last couple of years.

Sidebottom will probably just come in for Pattinson which makes sense and although Anderson has impressed me this year but I would not be surprised if he might have to make way for Simon Jones.

My team would be:

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Broad
Read
Flintoff
Sidebottom
Jones
Monty

Vaughan is on the edge in my eyes, he needs some runs soon or questions will be asked with the likes of Shah, Bopara, Patel, Sales & Denly playing well he needs to pick his game up. (I left Collingwood out as he is in worse form then Vaughan and I just don’t rate him as a test cricketer).

One thing to end on is that I am not sure Monty needs to be picked every game, Monty gets picked regardless of pitches, conditions or whatever and I think ‘maybe’ it is worth considering not playing him on pitches that aren’t slow bowler friendly.

I always like to have the option of a slow bowler and believe in a varied bowling attack but we all know Monty offers nothing in the batting or fielding department which is fine but do we really have to pick him every single game regardless if it is a pitch suitable for him or not?

I’m not so sure and think occasionally including someone like Swann perhaps who adds more with the bat or an extra quick bowler or even an extra batsman and have Vaughan or Pietersen turn there arm over if the need warrants it.

Anyway this is how I feel about the England selections at the moment, do you agree with any points or disagree?

Let's pick a keeper based on his ability to keep wicket. A tin gloves like Geraint Jones or Prior almost certainly costs more runs from dropped catches and byes than they can hope to score with the bat. Put Read at 8, Broad at 7, Freddie at 6. And pray to all that is divine that the 2004/05 Flintoff walks to the crease.

Top 5 unchanged - who really would come in for Vaughan - bowlers Freddie, Anderson, Sidebottom, Broad, and one from Monty or Simon Jones depending on the pitch

Before the series some thought the two teams were about, possibly with SA having the edge. An interesting excercise - what would your composite Eng/SA team be? Mine follows.

Like for like replacements, i.e. batsman for a batsman, buit no need for direct swaps i.e. number three (Bell v Amla), as I have ABDV opening.

G Smith (c)
AB deVilliers
I Bell
J Kallis
K Pietersen
A Prince
M Boucher (wk)
A Flintoff
M Morkel
D Steyn
M Panesar

I have no bloomin' idea.

Given that, as of today, Jones proclaims himself fit, he has to play.

The top 5 picks itself.

I'm a big Freddie fan.

I've argued all year that Anderson and Monty are our best bowlers.

So it's looking like

Cook
Strauss
Vaughan*
KP
Bell
Fred
Ambrose
SiBo
Anderson
Jones
Monty

which isn't great, battingwise, but arguably is the best bowling attack we have had since 2005.

Simon Jones brings more to the English team than any other bowler. He probably has more to bring to the Tests than any of the bowlers on eithr side. As long as he is Test match fit,he has to play in next two Tests. He brings more pace than Flintoff and can swing the ball both ways.

If England want to win this series they have to bring Jones back;if they are concerned only for future they can leave him out but that will mean losing a seies they might otherwise win.

I love the idea of bringing Key back from the wilderness after 4 years and making him captain immediately. Nothing like a bit of pressure. All the people suggesting that should probably begin preparing their applications for the Chairman of Selectors job.

Just a word of warning, I really rate Jones, and hope he comes back into the side. He aint the Messiah, though, and is unlikely to walk back into the side after 3 years out and start skittling out the likes of Smith and Kallis. Let's try not to put too much pressure on the boy...

I'd agree with your teamasthemost effective bowling line up - with Sid at 8 and Anderson at 9,Jones 10, Panesar 11. With a collective average of 53 its statistically as good as the Ashes 05 bottom 4.

For all Andersons success against the Kiwis, they were an appallingly weak side. Its amazing how many people think that seems to entitle Jimmy to now be just as successful against the Saffers! It aint gonna happen. Jimmy is the ultimate 'horses for courses' bowler and if the weather stays as it is currently (thank god!) I can see no reason to have 2 (sibo and Jimmy) swing bowlers in the side. Drop Jimmy, go with the accuracy of Sibo and bring in Jones to reverse it....!!smiley
