Emmanuel Ledesma’s cross for Dexter Blackstock to score the winner at Northampton could be a sign of things to come.

After featuring in central midfield at Stevenage on Saturday, Ledesma played out wide in last night’s game – and that’s where he will play from now on.

Blackstock's header gave Rangers a 1-0 win but more importantly, the match was another chance to look at Ledesma and Matteo Alberti.

Both summer signings played the majority of the match and striker Samuel Di Carmine came on as a second-half substitute.

Alberti looked exciting at times and showed he can pick a pass as well as run at defenders, while Ledesma showed some promise too.

Ledesma spent most of the game on the left but drifted over to the right to deliver a perfect cross for Blackstock’s goal.

He was later switched to the right flank – a position he apparently likes to play in despite being left footed.

It’s impossible to assess Ledesma properly at this stage, but what is obvious is that a big feature of his game is an ability to drift into holes and find space. He is very difficult to pick up.

Playing on the left allows him to wander inside and find space and when he plays on the right, he enjoys cutting in and shooting or delivering a cross.

It was clear from speaking to Iain Dowie after the game that he has definitely decided Ledesma will operate out wide rather than in the middle.

We won’t know until they play in competitive matches whether Ledesma and Alberti have enough about them going forward to compensate for potentially being quite easily picked off defensively in the Championship.

Dowie isn’t too concerned about that and is very much focused on creativity.

Personally, that’s exactly what I want to hear from a QPR manager.

I was also pleased to see a good performance from Matt Connolly at right-back.

Connolly played the whole match - partly because Peter Ramage has a slight hamstring problem - and did well. I like him and hope he'll feature a lot this season and beyond, regardless of who else comes in.

Next to Scotland, where Rangers will be playing Falkirk and Kilmarnock and training at a plush university campus.

I’ve heard Kaspars Gorkss will be giving a seminar on effective release clauses while he’s there.

Looks like Ledesma could be our answer to a left sided midfielder, bringing the old Blackstock back to life......Dowie is really starting to grow on me and I think he will do a good job for us this season.

Top article mate, Ledesma and Alberti look like real prospects and can only improve with age. Agreed about Connolly; he's looked solid from the moment we got him, though I prefer him playing in the centre back. I'm not sure if Ramage can play full back, but I'd probably shove him on the right with Connolly & Kaspars Gorkss in the middle.

Nice comment about Gorkss' seminar by the way winkeye

From what I've read about Ledesma he's always played out wide, so I was surprised to see him in the middle on Saturday. Kudos to Ian Dowie for trying something different though.
I think he'll be a very important player for us this season, and could be a rejuvenating factor in Dexter's game - how badly did he miss the supply from Cook last year?
In the second half of the 06/07 season, with Cook in fine form, Blackstock was unstoppable, especially in the air. But last season we didn't have as many moments where we would stretch a defence and pop the ball over from out wide. This is largely due to us using Buzsaky, Vine and Ephraim out wide, none of which are out and out wingers. When good old Gaz got on against Preston in April, although he toiled and struggled to find his touch for 10 minutes, what was the result? A perfect cross and a 93rd minute headed equaliser from Dex! Simple.
I look forward to more of the same over the next 9 months.

I am pleased with Dowie's focus on creativity - I know the end aim is finishing as high as possible but as West Brom/Bizzle city proved last year - the ablility to score goals counts for a lot in the championship. The reports on Ledesma sound very positive - let's hope he doesn't turn out to be one of these latin american players who drifts in and out of games as the championship requires 11 men going tooth and nail throughout. That said his touch of class will count for a lot and i'm sure he'll win us a pen or two with his platoon-esqu dives.

Alberti looked good in the first half.

Connolly I thought was excellent at right back but I will like to see him at centre with Gorkss and Delaney and Ramage left and right.

Mahon I thought worked tirelessly and he will continue to be an excellent squad player. Stewart and Hall looked poor at the back in terms of distribution but were good in the tackle and positionally looked okay.

Up front I thought both Blackstock and Agyemang held the ball up well but not once was there a ball played over the top for one of them and I thought Agyemang was generally poor. To be honest he will not get us goals this year and should be third or fourth option.

The italian striker looked good when he came on mobile and with some nice touches and should start with Blackstock.

Generally okay just really hope that we

to add to last post.

Generally okay just really hope that we play to the wings and use incicive and quick passing to open up teams as I feel we will do well playing that way this season

Best news I have heard for a long time!

Ramage already having niggling injuries doesn't bode well though.

I wasn't at the game but the comments about Agyemeng are disappointing. Out of the January influx he was the one player that truly excited me. I can well imagine that he is a confidence player however. I just hope that confidence doesn't take as long to return as Blackstock last term.
