Mel South - A Very Lucky Loser

comment on the article

Due to Serena Williams bad knee injury, Mel South has been granted a place into the second round. This is good news for her as she has been given more points for doing nothing and has given britain more hopes of success.

Mel South beat Kvitova 6-4 6-2!!!

She has made the most of her lucky loser spot. To be quite honest this result doesn't suprise me. Mel is an all or nothing player and I imagine in qualifying she missed a lot but today I guess she played well and made most of her groundstrokes. That gives her valuable ranking points and in the 3rd round she will play Mirza (who Keothavong beat last week) or Yuan. She could definately beat either of those players if she is on form.

Suddenly from being knocked out of qualifying and having a disappointing week she could make the Quarter Finals of a tier II tournament!!!

Gotta be honest this result has shocked me <laugh>. With her results in quallies I thought she had no chance against a player who owns a win over Venus Williams this year.
Very well done Mel <ok>

Mel plays Meng Yuan at 9pm (bst).

Until this tournament, Yuan had failed to get past the first round of any main tour event since Aussie Open '08, although she did reach a $50K (challenger) semi, on hard, in May.

Kuzfan - Oh dear! A little bit out here. Seems Yuan was the girl on form. Still a few quid for her!

We for once have a tennis player worthy of supporting, unlike the nasty Scot. Come on Mel!
