Should Caldwell get a longterm contract?

Caldwell is angling for a new contract but I don't think he's that great. In fact Balde at least brought steel to the defence.

"Another Loud Thought

Didn't he spend much of the first half of the season playing out of position?..."

No.

Erm...a CB at RB is out of position ALT; and Caldwell played more games at RB before January than he did at CB!

While I don't think Caldwell is a great player by any means, he IS better than McManus and, given that he doesn't get a game, is better than O'Dea; who has the POTENTIAL to be a better player than every defender currently at the club.

Caldwell should get a new deal because he's a known quantity and his wages are cheap by comparison with foreign players of lesser ability.
I'd personally offer him a 5 year deal on minimally improved wages and largely improved bonuses; the devil you know is always preferable to the devil you don't and there aren't many potential replacements within our price range.

Even Tamas' possible arrival doesn't mean a CB leaving the club; we've been light in that department since WGS arrived and decided Balde wasn't playing unless it was neccessary to make up a team of 11 men!

I'd rather Caldwell was given an extension than McManus (who I think is the weakest CB at the club);or Naylor; or Doumbe; or even Hinkel (who has a fair bit to prove this season).

I like him. He's a good defender, but hasn't he played Center Half most of his career? I forgive him for taking some time to settle. He came good toward the end of last season and that's good enough for me at the moment. I'd like to see a little more of him this season before hearing that the management has committed to a long term contract. I'm currently more concerned with big Mick's propensity to give the ball away with his big punts up the park. He defended superbly against Southampton, but insisted on giving possession away with a big boot rather than clean distribution, which Caldwell is more wont to do.

Fulham was just a mess all around, but I'm looking forward to today's game to see more of our CBs and try to judge how they're coming along, after all they're both young players and it makes sense that they can only get better.

JRIEPERG- First of all i have a life so dont sit on this all day every day which i didn't actually think your gyro would afford your internet. Caldwell isn't that great a player but a player that has played well for the last 6 or 7 games of the season deserves the chance in the defence for next season. You never know it might actually prove to be a good move and if he is dodgy then if Tamas comes in then you may have a better replacement but there is no guarantee that this Tamas boy is that good either.

You did actually state that it was his mistake that cost Celtic the game against Barca even though anyone of the mistakes made there could of cost you that game and if it didn't come when Caldwell did it, it would probably of came from someone else later on.

Also technically your captain is one of the worst captains of Celtic i've seen but he is a good leader. To be honest Celtic do need 2 new centre backs if they want to get to the last 8 in Europe, and if Celtic want to rely on 9 points at home in the Champs league then i'd be surprised if you got through with that total again. O'dea won't answer your prayers as he is too small and not good enough for a team like Celtic. Yes he could become a better defender but he wont grow. Would be a good addition to another SPL team on loan to get games like Kennedy, who is just there for fitness. Kennedy might turn out good for Celtic 09/10 if he stays fit but thats the major dependancy, fitness.

If he is willing to spend his career at the club it shows he will give his all and with this loyalty it merits a reward of a new contract. There is nothing better than having loyal players serve you.

i assume he wants to be "Celtic for life" because he realises his lack of talent means that no one else would touch him with a barge pole. Good thinking from his part!

Peanuts - excellent joke about the giro, although definitely would have been much better if you could spell the word first. That's what it always comes back to with you guys, giros, bucket-raking & slums.
Highly original.

Anyway, I enjoy watching the team that I support, and am happy even with numpties like caldwell in the team although it would be a lot better if we have someone in of a higher quality.
As stated before, he's hibs standard so he shouldn't be playing for the champions.

One other thing, George Burley & Gordon Strachan (the 2 best managers in Scotland at the moment) seems to think differently about McManus, but you seem to know a bit so I'll agree with you over them peanuts.

It always seems to be the same sort of player who asks for the lifetime deal. Caldwell fits that bill, he does OK in the SPL but up the ante and he's lacking the required class. He's landed on his feet at Celtic Park and to be fair he has made a decent contribution in recent seasons. However, he should follow the captain's example and get on with it without trying to improve his stock in the newspapers.Clean sheets come first, big contracts should be given as a reward for service.
