Can Lemoncello raise his game?

Olympics
comment on the article

Andrew Lemoncello has made the athletics team heading out to Beijing. The 3000m steeplechaser qualified after racing to his best-ever time in Paris on Saturday of 8.22.95.

However, the Fife athlete was dropped with three laps to go and finished a long way behind Tareq Mubarek of Bahrain, who won in 8:08.53.

How feasible is it for Lemoncello to make it through the heats to achieve his target of a place in the Olympic final?

If the selection criteria was to "make it out of the heats" I would regard the team as "bloated", many will fall at the first hurdle, or low height, distance. On a good day the Fifer could get thru the first round but there are others to whom it is a much bigger obstacle.

He has an extremely long way to go...

Mark Rowland, who holds the British record, ran that at the Soeul Olympics' final to get an amazing, and completely unexpected, bronze...and he ran 8mins 7.96secs...which was only a few seconds outside the world record at the time...and is still miles better than any other Brit has been able to run...

One of the most astonishing runs at the time, and for me one of the highlights for Britain at that particular Olympics...

Lemoncello will have done more than well if he gets into the final...

But didn't Lemoncello flop at the trials? Not much "consistency" - which is what so many people on this Athletics board want to use to merit the inclusion in the team of controversial recent under-performers!

Two years ago Lemoncello looked a great prospect. Sadly he hasnt made the progressionn the likes of Lancashire & Rimmer have made. In my opinion he is very lucky to be going to the games after his poor trial showing & has no chance of making the Olympic final

Mark Rowlands performance was a total one off. Not only is it way faster than any other brit ever, but it is also over 5 seconds faster than Rowland managed in any other race during his entire career.

If Lemon were to produce a performance 5 seconds quicker than his PB he would probably make the final.

I think it is incredibly unfair on many of the athletes of today that people compare their PB during their career with the PBs of athletes from the past who have completed their careers. they may well have a faster run in there somewhere.

Fair point BigGut...

Would be good to see Lemoncello knock out a really good PB while he's out there though...

Always good to see an athlete achieve a PB in trying to make their way through an event...even if they're not able make it to the next round...it shows progress...

Given the opportunity less fancied British athletes have been given, i.e. time and resources put in, always feel PBs should be a minimum aim...anything else is a bonus...

Though I admit that PBs over the longer distances at Beijing will be difficult...( was in Beijing last year...and the heat and pollution was off the register...can't see how the longer distances will be managed by the athletes or organisers )...

allanwells,

Stick to something you know about please.

For a Start Lemon is already in the Semi-Final of the chase as there are only 2 rounds. Miracle from God???? HE IS ALRADY THERE YOU MUPPET!

Next 8.10. For a start Lemon is never going to achieve that level of improvement. However if he did you need to realise that 8.10 is a time that only 4 athletes in Beijing will have run this year. Anyone running 8.10 in Beijing will have a very strng shout of a medal.

Thirdly, if like me you have run steeplechase you are going to be a fan of the Kenyans, what that has to do with Lemons chances I have no idea.

Lemon is the fastest steeplachaser in the UK since 1994 and the 11th of all time. He deserves his place.
