Ferguson set for GB role?

International Manchester United
comment on the article
Sir Alex Ferguson

Lord Sebastan Coe has told Radio 5 Live this morning that Sir Alex Ferguson would be the ideal man to lead a Great Britain football team at the 2012 Olympics.

The Manchester United manager has hinted he will retire in three years time, so there is a possibility he will be available for 2012.

Would you like to see Sir Alex lead a GB team at the Olympics?

Who knows what players the 4 home Nations will have by 2012.

That is 4 years from now and all but 3 players must be under 23 years old which means that they are only 19 years old or younger at this momment.

I think though there are some who are very much for the GB team, and some very much against, for the most part im sure most people just dont care. Football fans are passionate supporters of Scotland, England, Wales, etc, but is there really going to be that much excitment for team GB? I frankly wouldnt care less if it happened, and would only be worried about injuries to players from my club. The world cup and european championships are massive events that people get behind, but if any of Britains top players were to get injured playing in some olympic tournament, im sure there will be a lot of disdain. There is already contention between the bigger european teams, and their players looking to play in the tournament, never mind playing for a silly mish mash GB select that few people would be interested in anyway

Get the BOA to organise a home nnations tournament and the winners of it automatically represent Great Britain as British champions and so avoid the hassle of running the risk of individual home nations being barred from FIFA tournaments in their own right.

i think he would be an amazing manager to the side. but for the maximum of maybe 3 months training. could he create a team into a medal winning side?

thats when the age factor could creep in. who else could take the job then?

ChrisMO*'s comment about the irony of the non-English countries complaining is irony itself! He assumes England are good enough to represent GB at the Olympics.....they couldn't even qualify for Euro 2008, but I suppose being on "home soil" they'd qualify automatically!!!! Easy, isn't it????

Whilst i am realistic and prepared to admit that the GB team would consist of a lot of English players do you really think that players such as Bale, Ramsey and Gunter would not be in it from Wales alone ?

If Ferguson doenst want to do it i cnat see a manager in employment fancying it as it will clash with the season starting, why not go for Sir Bobby Robson ? What a fitting job to finish his career with if health permits, i think he would be perfect!

The answer is as long as players are UK nationals they should be allowed to play for TeamGB. For a scot to represent Great Britain is his/her right, as should the choice to opt out.

SNP wishes to stop scottish footballers playing for GB at the olympics, which is a restraint of citizens rights to complete for their country (whilst Scotland is still in the Union).

So why doesn't Alex Salmon tell Chris Hoy he is banned from cycling for TeamGB in 2012. Until any Scottish independence, creating barriers by national football authorities is nonsense. I see a Kerry Packer or European Union courts scenario being tested here.

My opinion is if players (whether Scottish, English, Welsh wish to be selected for Team GB in 2012, London; they should be free to do so, unhindered. If they are not interested then they can opt out of selection.

I think Sir Alex will be too old by 2012. Mark Hughes, Terry Venerables, Gordon Strachen or Kevin Keegan would be more suitable.

Aargh, why on earth do we have to have a football team playing in the olympics anyway - is anyone else like me, absolutely sick of the constant deluge of 'soccer' being forced down my throat? Please, please, give us a break from this most over-hyped travesty of a 'sport'. These overpayed and pampered idiots have no place at the Olympic games.

Im not saying that fergie wudnt be a good choice for manager but i just feel that for all he has done for football and our country, David Beckham should be given first refusal for the job. I do not think 4 a minuit that Becks wud be a good manager in the long term but 2 b honest wud we win with the gr8 jose moriniho???

i just think that he has done so much for our country, that he shud be aloud to have a great honour of managing a GB team in the olyimpics.

He more than likely will not be playing football any more at tht time so he wud be available
