The Open - day four

The Open
comment on the article

What an Open Championship it has been so far.

To think only a few days ago all the talk was about whether this tournament would be devalued by the absence of Tiger Woods.

If this is what happens when the world number one is not playing, perhaps the R&A will consider banning him from future events!

OK, maybe not. But one thing is for certain, we are heading for an absolute cracking final day at Birkdale.

Who is going to win? Can Greg Norman hold on? Will Padraig Harrington retain his title? Can KJ Choi come from behind or will be get a charge from further down the field?

Which of the home hopes has the best chance of capturing a first Claret Jug since 1999?

So many questions, have you got the answers?

Just a word on the BBC coverage.........great as usual......one criticism......not much coverage of the Americans in contention, especially Anthony Kim who was really in the mix for most of his round..........well played padraig

Tiger Woods absence should not devalue Harringtons win, we should note that Harrington is like Woods nemesis when they play together, he is the only player to constantly outscore Tiger when playing together, and he won last year with Woods in the field.

Two things about this.
1) Harrington got more than his fair share of lucky breaks with good lies in the rough time and again. Also his so called wrist injury, apparently serious enough to consider withdrawing from the competition has got to be a red herring and a tad annoying.
2) Greg Norman was contemplating not playing according to his missus and in the end only played in the biggest golf tournament in the world!!!! to give him practice for his next seniors tournament. I ask you.
Poulter should have been given the tournament because he wanted it badly, played well and didn't try to con us about injuries or enter this competition on a whim and in so doing prevent someone playing who really wanted to be there, a competition in which he couldn't care less about victory other than adding a few more dollars to his vast fortune. Neither he nor Kenny Perry nor Sandy Lyle should ever be invited back.

Limerickjohn, I watched on ABC. There wasn't much coverage of Tony Kim. I believe ABC had its own cameras rather than getting BBC feed.

Furyk and Stenson also had very little air time.

Poulter had a disproportionately high coverage. Maybe they liked his pink trousers.

Furyk's awful putting routine where he lines up and you think he is about to putt, then backs off and starts again is the reason he is not shown much i suppose.............

aka_bluepeter....you are obviously crazy!!.....they should have given the title to Poulter coz the Harrington injury was dubious?????....Norman should have been thrown out because he was unsure as to whether to play!!!!.....

aka_bluepeter......are you actually stupid or what. You wrote a long article of pure rubbish e.g Poulter should have been given the tournament because he wanted it badly....here's one for you....i should have won the lotto because i wanted it badly...makes a lot of sense alright.
Harrington played incredible under the pressure of the final day, played like the champion he is and is clearly good enough to enter the top three golfers in the world. Easily the best european golfer of today and a great guy

It is highly debateable even if Tiger had played whether he would have won this one. The weather conditions I feel would not have suited his style of play one little bit.

More importantly it should be pointed out that Tiger Woods does not win every tournament he enters. He has only (??) won 14 of the 50 odd majors he has played to date.

Nothing should detract from Harrington's fine win and hopefully we will see the confidence and desire in other players increase so when he does return, Tiger will be given more of a run for his money!

only lol

amazing thing to say!

best average of all time by miles and miles- he only wins one in 3.5(against fields of 150)- that is amazingly good

i agree with the rest you say!

but i think the most important thing about woods- is that this may be the first injury of many, with the way he swings- he cant keep doing that for ever, his carrer may be shorter than many, unlesss he changes things- which could also be detrimental with his game

Poulter's putt on 18 was fantastic - he thought he was still well in it at the time and sank a treacherous 15-footer for par and a real shout. Was the shot of the championship for...nearly 5 minutes. Padraig's 2nd to the 17th was a belter. Would he have gone for it if Poulter had managed to sink one of those birdies earlier and had finished 6-under, though? Answers on a postcard - or in the little white box below.
Was Tiger missed? Only in the minds of those who aren't aware of his history in cold, breezy, wet conditions. He doesn't do well - see Carnoustie 1999, Muirfield when Ernie won for details. So I don't expect he would have figured - except on the TV coverage.
Agree his swing may continue to cause damage. We shall see.

he will be featuring in many other majors over the next 10 or so years!

rose allthough one of the best players on tour in terms of ability- is becoming another promising brtish choker-- i hope the can turn things around, but he hasnt shone signs yet!
