Melanie South and Anne Keothavong

Melanie South commences proceedings on the Stadium Court in the Tier 1 Rogers Cup, Montreal at 1600 utc today against the #10 seed Mlle. Marion Bartoli.
Bartoli leads 1-0 H2H with a victory over Melanie in 2007 at Eastbourne.

GB's #3 Melanie has reached a career high #136 in world rankings and is just one point behind GB's #2, Elena Baltacha.

Certainly one of the biggest matches of Melanie's career she should attack the highly experienced, but less than aesthetic or athletic Bartoli, from the outset without reservation.

Tomorrow, Anne Keothavong has a tough first round encounter against #13 seed Maria Kirilenko.

Moscowvite Maria is being promoted as one of the very big stars of the future.

Kirilenko, a magnificent performer when in full flight, with 11 career tour titles secured, can nevertheless be prone to lose confidence when put under opening set pressure.
Anne, who has yet to win a tour title, must intimidate her opponent early and put Kirilenko in immediate difficulties, if she is to prevail.

Portugal's amazing 15 year old #1, Michelle Larcher De Brito also plays today.
Michelle, who has beaten Agnieszka Radwanska and given Serena Williams a fright already this year, meets 19 year old Californian Vania King for the first time in competition.

Slovakia's stunning world #31 Dominika Cibulkova, commences her campaign on the Banque Nationale court against Ukraine's world #62 Elena Vesnina, at the same time as Melanie South.

The Rogers Cup is a superb tournament with world #1 Ana Ivanovic as #1 seed and Jelena Jankovic #2 seed, with many other world class performers present.

Very best good wishes and good luck today, Melanie South!

Bartoli's now got a 'swinging racquet up and down between her spread wide legs, receiving action'
---------------------------------------
conosu2, she is hilarious to watch with her new stance for returning and of course her serve is still funny to watch.

Dom made it through 6-1 6-1 and De Brito (the young talent is currently 4-2 up in the 3rd set.

Kuzfan

Mlle.Bartoli's just amazing!
As you say, she still has her, as ftbt would say, 'constipated ' serve and she has now added her 'unique' returning position.

It's as if Marion and her Dad, Walter, have got together and said 'they thought my service action was distinctive, wait 'til they see this!'

Dominika, as you say kuzfan, sailed through and Michelle is through as well.

Michelle Larcher De Brito is a name for the future.
Already this week, Michelle, by making the second round will move to world #141.
As you know Michelle is not 16 until next year! yikes
She will possibly meet #16 seed Flavia Pennetta in the next round as world #18 Pennetta meets Ashley Harkleroad tomorrow.
De Brito/Pennetta could be an awesome matchup.
NO-ONE wants to play 15 year old Michelle Larcher De Brito.
No, not even your beloved Kutzy, kuzfan, imagine that contest in the third round!

Seriously I would expect Flavia to make short work of the certain future star De Brito.

conosu2, you built her up and then put a statement like that at the end. Firstly Pennetta has got to win her 1st round match but I wouldn't bet against De Brito beating Pennetta as De Brito has done well recently.

Anne is on tonight against Kirilenko. A very winnable match in my eyes if Anne plays well.

Anne lost 6-1 7-5. She has a lot of points to come off her ranking next week (from winning Vancouver this time last year), so expect a drop to the mid 90s. sadface

''Anne is on tonight against Kirilenko. A very winnable match in my eyes if Anne plays well.''

Putting aside for a moment what actually transpired this is some remark, completely ignoring the fact that Kirilenko (although admitedly not having a great season)
is ranked 20, a ranking that Keathovong is unlikely to achieve because she is simply not that good. In nearly eight years as a professional, Keothavong has only ever beaten 6 players ranked inside the top 100 (at the time she faced them)and three of those were in this country.
And before you tell me that Tracy Austin and Venus Williams have gone on record to say that she has the potential to reach the top 50, then don't forget they were both talking to the British Media at the time and can sometimes get it wrong.

Keothavong may well have the odd good win but so do a lot of other players.

Anne is short of weapons to hurt her opponents. Her physique is slight. It is difficult to see how she can improve her game, given she has been in tennis a long time already.

Don't have a go at Kuzfan too much.
The poster has for days been full of trepidation, at the possibility of his namesake and No1 player having a third round encounter, with the formidable, outstanding, 15 year old Michelle Larcher De Brito!magic

And it is indded a reality.
Svetlana/Michelle Larcher De Drito, third round tomorrow.
The amazing Portuguese prodigy was bagelled in the second set and came back to win against veteran world #18, winner of 9 tour titles, Flavia Penetta.

This amazing young player faces an entirely different prospect tomorrow.
World #4, 22 career titles, grand slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Can't wait!

For lovers of irony:

July 2007, Lexington $50K - Stephanie Dubois beats Anne Keothavong to win the title.

Aug 2007, Vancouver $50K - Ann Keothavong beats Stephanie Dubois to win the title.

July 2008, Montreal Tier I 1st round - Maria Kirilenko beats Anne Keothavong.

2nd round - Stephanie Dubois beaths Maria Kirilenko.

OK - I must get out more.

"OK - I must get out more."

And me.
I'm not sure if it's true but I've heard you don't have to go to the phone-box to make telephone calls, something about being able to make calls from home?
I know it's probably a wind-up, but I must get out and find out if it's true!
