Docked Points

As someone who only watches boxing occasionally I was wondering if judges have to dock points when the referee says so. I can't see that they took a blind bit of notice of the ref in the Williams fight last night.

McDermott must feel agrieved about the result, but to be fair, he looked lost before that superb 5th. I would of gone for McDermott to just shade it with the points deductions, but Danny showed great heart coming back from that round - he got caught flush about 10 times - you don't usually see that in the HW's!

Mark Green 114-111 | judge: Marcus McDonnell 114-113 | judge: Richard James Davies 113-113

Seems to me, logically, that Mark green definately deducted 3 points (without deductions or knockdowns 128 points total is the least) and the others probably did, but scored some rounds even.

I don't know what all the fuss about the result is, it was quite clearly a win for Danny Williams. I re-watched the fight on Sunday morning and scored the fight 115-112 Williams. McDermott only won one round clearly, and I think that I was being generous scoring the fifth a 10-8 (I hate 10-8 rounds where there isn't a knockdown) and the 1st, 6th and 11th even, I was tempted to deduct McDermott points for being a complete disgrace to the pugilistic art but resisted this temptation. Even with the three point deductions in the 11th and 12th there was still clear water between the pair.

What struck me about the fight was the really poor standard of punditry by the commentary team, Jim Watt had McDermott winning the first three and last four rounds...thats a joke.

McDermott doest have a big enough punch to make the grade so this result is the best for British boxing. How Williams didnt go down in the 5th i just dont know. He got hit so many times and all heavy shots as well. McDermott should have been able to put him away but he didnt have that heavyweight punch.

I like Danny and he does have heart. If he had some brains he would be dangerous. Id like to see him get another chance at the title. Haye has been talking about himself and Danny fighting in the future if they were to both hold titles.

Danny's got to earn a living, and as such he's entitled to try and put whatever slant he can on such a tedious none-event of a fight. BUT, what does bother me is his continual referrals to his freak-show against the ghost of Mike Tyson. A fat no-hope part-timer did Tyson after Williams too. If that's going to be the peak of Danny's career, then for Christ's sake get out now son.
But he won't. He might even get another ill-conceived and ill-deserved shot at the "big time", and a subsequent awful battering at the hands of Haye, Wladimir or Sam Peter, before he works out he's nowhere near good enough.

Well, I agree at not giving DW a title shot but let Haye on him so we can see what the future of British HW boxing has in store for us.

Haye should show us he can retire DW and Audley before any three of them can get a world title short.

Apart from the KO of a shot Tyson, Im not sure I've ever really seen Williams at his true potential. He's been one of the most frustrating British fighters I can remember following. I beleive his has a genuine talent, losts of heart, a great chin and telling power, but the man is almost never in shape. I hate to sound too anal, but if you fail to prepare, then you prepare to fail, which is pretty much the story of Danny's highflight career, and I dont see it changing, not at 35 yrs old.....what a shame!

Remember when Danny came back with his dislocated arm to KO his opponent Mark/Mike Potter??

All I can say is I went to Canary Wharf 2 and half years ago to see the most pwthetic fight in heavyweight history. Danny Williams v Fraudley Harrison. How Williams has the nerve to carry on fighting after that distplay who knows. As for Fraudley he is the biggest dissapointment in the boxing world. Nothing shoert of a disgrace both these fighters!

The Heavyweight boxing scene is very poor at the moment. There is no really interesting talent available. They all just seem to be fat slugger's. Shame really.......
