Live - The Open, day two

The Open
comment on the article

Right - it's day two of the Open from Royal Birkdale and what do we know so far?

Well, for a start, Tiger or no Tiger, this championship has already had more than its fair share of intrigue and incident.

We started Thursday thinking any round below par would top the leaderboard by the end of the day and we were right - Rocco Mediate, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby are sitting pretty on top of the pile.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/gol...

We've learned not to write off the veterans - Tom Watson, Greg Norman and even injury-hit Jean van de Velde are bang in the mix - while we've also learned not to bank on 'favourites' - Vijay Singh and Ernie Els are more off the pace than a three-legged donkey in the national.

We also know that Sandy Lyle may or may not be injured, he may or may not dislike the rain, he may or may not have unfairly deprived a more worthy competitor his place in the championship and he may or may not have dented his chances of captaining Europe in the Ryder Cup in future following his withdrawal after 10 holes yesterday.

And, finally, we now know not to take our annual leave at Royal Birkdale if we want blazing sun and sangria - the conditions have been worse than a Lyon family caravaning holiday in the depths of Clacton.

Did I miss anything?

David Duval... was he the champion who, when asked afterwards if he'd been scared, replied something like "man, I was so scared I nearly went to the bathroom in my pants" ... my all time favorite euphemism.
As for Harrington... isn't he the only player who can win this without the asterisk by his name? ... I think he'll go close.

How predictable that the BBC should subject the sporting world to 5 hours continuous coverage of a perennial British choker struggling to the make the cut.
Well done BBC and to those 606 idiots who moaned about too much Tiger last year.

Daly playing rubbish but all credit to him for still finishing his two rounds. Shame Lyle and Beem did not have the same attitude.

Those of you who call it The Open and then criticise the Americans for calling it the World Series when they play baseball are hypocrites. The Brits are no longer a sporting force or any other kind of force. We are bad at all sports, except snooker and darts. Call it the British Open, please, and let's have done with all this old-fashioned nonsense of believing the Brits are something special.

Duval didn't lose his game, that was Ian Baker-Finch. Duval won the open, woke up the next day to discover that nothing had really changed, and decided he wanted more out of life than golf provided.

Good to see David Duval, a really nice bloke, back in contention for a Major, just as it is good to see Monty, a really not so nice bloke, once again not in contention.
A bit like the commentators too. Peter Alliss, witty, charming, funny, Mark James, sarcastic, unfunny and charmless.

Potrodelpicasso.... I think you'll find that it's called "The Open" for a number of reasons ...Tradition... Tradition.... Tradition... It is the Oldest major championship, it is open to all and was predomenently played initially by Brits as the national Championships... Who obviously new that they were in fact British.

In the USA if you say to them The Open they immediately think you are reffering to what we call The US Open.... They refer to The Open as the British Open

Tradition is a wonderful thing grounds us all, and how you equate that with whether we believe ourselves to be special or not is rather to infantile for me and just an excuse to take a shot at the Brits...

I suppose you would have the globally accepted, respected and time honoured name "The Home of Golf" in reference to The Royal and Ancient at St Andrews downgraded to "The British Home of Golf"... That would really show us our place in the scheme of things! .... Well done!
