Who will win Sports Personality?

It's been seven months since Joe Calzaghe lifted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy, and the race to find his successor is hotting up nicely.

I have written a piece listing the main contenders - based on an average of different bookies' odds - and it is clear that any one of around 20 sportsmen and women are in with a shot of dethroning Calzaghe, who may yet still have a say himself.

Lewis Hamilton, buoyed by his brilliant victory at Silverstone, is the clear favourite, with a clutch of Olympic hopefuls tucked in behind him.

A gold medal here, an Open win there and Hamilton could be nervously looking over his shoulder.

If I was a betting man, I'd plump for an each-way flutter on Lee Westwood. The Nottingham Forest fan was third at the US Open, and with Royal Birkdale and the Ryder Cup still to come, he could worth a look at a decent price.

But what do you think? We'd be interested to hear your views on what could be the most hotly-contested battle in years.

Padraig Harrington's back to back majors might make him a good bet for the overseas personality !

Laura Robson is surely a shoe in for the Young Sportsperson given Tom Daley's last place finish in the Olympic diving competition.

Hamilton will walk it this year if he wins the world title - Mansell and Hill have won it previously in Olympic years so the omens are good !

Could Harrington win the overall prize. The overseas personality will & should go to Michael Phelps. The fact that Padraig seems to held in the same regard both sides of the Irish Sea, might the B.B.C. move the goalposts?

As I've said since the beginning of this thread, if Lewis Hamilton wins the F1 Championship, he will win the SPOTY award. Guaranteed. If he doesn't, then it will be Rebecca Adlington.

Msybe we should look at a fantastic Olympic year, we have all been glued to the TV for the past fortnight following the higs highs and lows of some of the best olympic athletes, gymnasts, and martial artists our country has produced for a very long time, training funding has obviously helped in making this a fantastic achievement but none of it would of been possible without all of them putting in the hard work and training that this has required, I for one must say thank you to the whole GB team gold medalists, silver, bronze and the ones who tried there best including tom in the 10M high board who showed that there is a prospect for 2012 and we can all look forward to it.

I really don't care who wins as I am fed up with the format of SPOTY.

Call me old fashioned but I would prefer the votes to be done and dusted before the event so that the programme can concentrate on the events as well as the personalities. I think it used to be called Sports Review of the Year didn't it? To me the balance has gone too far towards the voting on the night and too little on the Review of the Year. Perhaps this is a reflection on how little sport the Beeb actually have the rights to screen now?

Unfortunately the Beeb seems to be addicted to interactivity so SPOTY will be its usual, and IMHO, unsatisfying self

Regards

Ged
