Is this good business for Celtic?

Scottish Premier Celtic
comment on the article

Georgios Samaras is poised to put pen to paper on a three-year deal with Celtic.

The fee hasn't been disclosed yet, but it is sure to be markedly less than the £6m Manchester City paid Heerenveen for the striker in January 2006.

What do you think of the deal Celtic fans?

Samaras made a decent impression when he was on loan at Celtic Park in the second half of last season.

He is only 23 and looks to have a lot of potential.

On the flipside, he was a flop at Manchester City and was erratic in terms of his finishing and his ability to lead the line.

What do you think if you're a City fan? Are you glad to get rid of the Greece international or should he have been given more time?

Let's not get carried away Celtic fans, it's very easy to get into the CL if you're playing in a league of two. How long you stay in the CL is a different matter, pinning your hopes on 'quality' players like Samaras might prove unwise. Look how well he played for Greece in the Euros.

as a CELTIC fan i,m certainly not getting carried away , but find it hard to take on board , narrow minded views from some of you so called football supporters . SAMARAS may not be a DROGBA or a TORRES but he was part of the GREECE team that lifted the euro a few years ago , also their where more clubs than CELTIC looking his signature , i suppose DRAGONBOY you follow a team in that league of 4, surely it should,nt be to difficult to get into the C.L. So to all out there , broaden your mindset before you criticise any of the old firm .

I think Samaras is a wise signing. Better the devil you know if nothing else, and the fact he has the ability to be a top-class player is beyond dispute .. and if he has cost no more or less then Donati and Gravesen he's a bargain buy in comparison.

Let's face it, we're not going to get anything better for a couple of million or so ...

As for the SPL being a mickey-mouse league, most leagues in Europe have only one or two sides with a genuine chance of winning the title, and the over-rated, money-rotten EPL is fast becoming the same, anyway.

In any case, take all these foreign players out of the equation and what would you have? .. not a lot!

onedragon, I'll make a bold prediction that the EPL will be won by either Man U or Chelsea next season. O.K. maybe not that bold as the EPL is also a two team league.

I find it amazing that people are comparing the SPL to the EPL. Whilst it is a fair point that either Chelsea or Man U will win the EPL, does this make it the same as the SPL ??? Does this mean you expect clubs like kilmarnock etc to sign players like Torres?? The gulf is huge, as was displayed by the last 4 competitors in last years champions league.

I watched Samaras in the EPL and he was sadly out of his depth, i would think he could do a job for Celtic, but only to a cerain level.

The SPL is more competitive than the EPL. 3 teams out of 20 winning the EPL in the last 13 years, compared to 2 out of 12. You do the math.

You're lucky 5th-9th in your league seem to end up with a spot in Europe somehow, otherwise you'd never get there.

Ha ! man city fans have no right to compare themselves with us. I could see the point in utd fans having a pop but for city fans who have done nothing in the EPL to make any comparisons is laughable ! you can only beat whats put in front of you, thats what we do.

tazmikky, only two teams in contention for the EPL means that you can compare it directly to the SPL in the most important aspect - competitiveness.

In recent seasons Celtic have defeated Man Utd, Liverpool and Blackburn (2) in European competition. These are facts that cannot be disputed. English ignorance of most things Scottish has always been a fact of life, but most Scots will continue to rely on realism and not be too concerned about some of the sillier comments emanating from south of the border!
