Kelly Pavlik

Would first like to start by saying what a breath of fresh air Pavlik has been since entering onto the scene. He has re-invigorated the fervour around the middleweight division that was dying under the tawdry, tepid and downright torrid reigns of Hopkins and Taylor.

Thats the praise out of the way.

Would just like to get your views on Pavliks potential. For all his magnificent power the only punches I have seen him throw with any meaning are the jab, right cross usually in a 1-2 or 1-1-2 combination. Now this is very effective against fighters like Lockett but is he going to have to improve his repertoire to stay at the top?

I think that as soon as Pavlik comes across a fighter with a combination of the following skills he will struggle:

a) A good bob/weave fighter. This will negate the fearsome straight punches of Pavlik allowing a fighter to get inside. Somewhere we haven't seen Pavlik fight yet.

b) Lateral movement. Again will negate Pavliks straight punches and highlight his inability/reluctance to throw the hook either as a lead or part of a combination.

c) Ability to hook. We have not really seen the effect of a vicious body attacking hook specialist on Pavlik. An attack which I feel he is vulnerable to due to his high guard and upright stance.

Looking back at his three world level fights (there are only three of them.

Miranda- Shown to be a very very limited fighter. Pavlik showed great courage however to back Miranda up when most people thought he would be blown away.

Taylor 1- Very nearly lost this (was out on his feet) against a very de-motivated fighter who had struggled badly against Light middlewights Ouma and Spinks.

Taylor 2- Taylor was beaten before he got in the ring. Took no risks and was happy to finish the fight on his feet.

My basic point is that if Pavlik is to reign at the top he must improve his skills dramatically. I feel he is very lucky to have gotten to the top at a time when there are no fighters around (with the qualities mentioned above) to expose his weaknesses.

I actually think Abraham would win if they were to meet tomorrow.

Would just like to re-iterate though that I am a big fan of Pavliks, whilst his humble good manners are a step away from the 90's and 00's brash that had begun to grate on many fans nerves.

(Please try not to make this into a JC thread even if he is worth a mention...)

What do you think of my points above (I await correction), and what do you think the future holds for Pavlik? (Sorry if a little long winded).

i think pavlik is a good fighter but as for p4p top five i feel that is far too high look at the fighters around him who have foguht a multiple weights and reigned for far longer. i think he neeeds to fight with his head far more than his heart if he is to reign for a long time. if he carries on blocking punches with his face then his career will be short, if he uses his jab though his amateur name of the ghost, named that because he was elusive, will be apt.

I feel an abraham fight will be very close though AA has to short his hooks cos at the momet they loop from a mile out and pavliks jab would negate there power.

Finally those who say a froch fight is a joke are the ignorant ones for me, just ask lou dibella he claims that a froch fight is a very tough one and no wonder he wants taylor to sidestep him. a kessler-pavlik fight would be a clash of identical straight line styles and the tougher one would prevail, which could be either as pavlik hasn't fought at 168 yet. the froch fight though would show if pavlik could deal with lateral movement, an unothorodox stle and huge body shots which he hasn't yet proved at, albeit cos he hasn't come up against it, at world level.

I think Pavlik would have too much for Froch, but Kessler would be a different proposition. He is stronger, bigger and punches at least as hard. I think Kessler would beat him by KO in the later rounds. Kessler is a much better fighter than he's given credit for, and is always in peak condition.

Did you see Kessler - Sartisan?

He fights like that against Pavlik he'll get buried inside four rounds.

I think the Kessler fight would be irrelevent - Calzaghe will be retired by the time they've met as he is only interested in Jones now, and Kessler did take a beating to his confidence after his loss so whatever the outcome, Joe will not fight Kelly.

As far as Abraham goes, my reckoning is he'll fight (and destroy) Sturm for the WBA strap then start calling out Kelly. Good match-up, and it could go either way although I'm leaning towards Kelly at present.

Pavlik would batter Kessler. Far too limited technically, and made for Kelly.

As in, Pavlik does everything Kessler does, but he can also fight on the back foot. He’d be counter punching the guy’s head off all night.

I actually think JT would beat Kessler as well. For the very same reason. Fights like that, the person who is the harder to land on generally wins.

Don’t know old foe.

3 world belts, ring champion, victories over Taylor, Miranda and Abraham in the last couple of years. I’d really question who in the top 3-4 would be able to top that?

I think he's doing fine as he is. Why change when his combinations are so effective as they are now.

I'd say if he was shorter he may need to but he has a height advantage against middles and if you ever saw Tommy Hearns everything he did came off the jab. If I was kelly I would carry on and fight as i'm doing now if it's not broke don't fix it.
