Billy Joe Saunders & Amateur Boxing

Hello all,

I was browsing on the ABA website last night & noticed that Billy Joe Saunders is the #1 P4P Cadet Amateur Boxer - how do you all rate him as a future pro prospect for the UK? I checked out a few of his clips on youtube but as I'm not that knowlegable on amateur boxing I wasn't sure if I should have been impressed with what I saw!

Would it be normal for him to progress to the adult amateur boxing scene, then become a pro? Or can he jump straight to the pros if he thinks he is ready? Which is the most common route?

And on another note, I was suprised at how the eastern europeans seem to dominate the rankings in the amateur boxing scene! Is that a good indication that we can expect eastern europeans to become bigger stars in the next 10-15 years?

Cheers!

I think it's more indicative of their technical boxing skill, but they don't tend to have a special edge or many of the professional qualies they need.

Amateur Boxing has often been dominated by Eastern Europeans (along with Cubans), mainly due to the status aspect.

An amateur boxer from a former Eastern Block country would stay in the amateur ranks for far longer than their western counterparts (mainly for political reasons).

Obviously things have changed in the last 15 years or so, but it's taken a certain amount of time for the Eastern Europeans to catch up to the standard of their 'professional' western counterparts.

The Klitscho'c made the first major breakthrough's and in recent years the Sidorenko's, Dzinziruk's, Adamek's, Karmazin's and such like have followed suit.

Expect to see many more in the not too distant future, Bute, Diancou & Jo Jo Dan are 3 Romanian's who are all moving towards World Titles (Bute of course already SM IBF Champ) & a few Russian's are also looking really promising too.

Got a feeling he is has got a KO shot.

With head guards and teenage arms it may not be easy to judge. Have a feeling those in the know, know.
