Williams Domination...2008

comment on the article

Serena and Venus Williams now that is what I call 'domination'. Let's be clear Wimbledon 2008 Ladies has been dominated by the Defending Champion and her sister. Now all those who hate the sisters for what ever reason, dislike the sisters for whatever reason, prefer Serena over Venus or you prefer Venus over Serena for whatever reason, the facts are undeniable, Singles final & Doubles final Williams/Williams. Even if you think they play boring tennis, they are the worst grunters whatever, the facts cannot be denied...Total domination, an awesome display and very well deserved wins. Serena and Venus fantastic.

Now I am a realist, I take one tournament at a time, and for all Williams fans let the GLOATING begin. The commentators have been thrilled the Wimbledon crowd was awestruck.

Ladies Singles Champion - Venus Williams
Ladies Doubles Champions - Venus and Serena Williams.

Both these girls play extraordinarily great tennis. They behave superbly on the court and its been a pleasure to see them play at SW19 this year. Well done to both of them.

Venus won her 5th Wimby, is it me or...in tennis terms, is this a great achievement or what? History cannot be changed, facts are facts...I am so glad to have witnessed this moment of tennis history from both sisters. It's been said before, when they are up for it and want to, Venus and Serena are head and shoulders above the rest.

Night all, great night for all Venus and Serena fans. bubbly

Let's give credit where credit is due. I'm not a fan of 'dominance' of any nature, but when there is class and quality in that dominance, borne out of sheer skill and sacrifice; then credit must be given.
The Williams sisters are truly awesome; and please, let's face the fact, they are beautiful to watch too. Though they may not pass for Miss America, they are lovely and beautiful anyway. And their tenis is wonderful.
Thank you Williams sisters for providing us a world class final.

I am not very keen on womems tennis generally but today less than ever considering the level of play and the conditions 3 sets etc.and money earned.
The finals at Wimbledon were not great in my opinion with the sisters just the entertainment value interest etc.
Most do not know a great deal about tennis are interested in the occasion really. Celebrity is not the same as talent.
If one goes to U TUBE and checks the video of the semi finals of the 2007 US Open with Henin and Venus Williams you can compare the level of play with that of the finals at Wimbledon now, you will note the pace skill and shot making is vastly superior at US Open then
Once Henin retired she left a void that no one filled.
She played at a higher level and beat both sisters at that open in spite of being so small physically and struggling through so many personal problems health and family.
Comparisons will be made and opinions vary but that is mine

lets face it there is a williams domination. I persoanlly believe the Williams owned Henin most of the time. But she was a great champion though but there is a reason the Williams are still playing and winning and she retired. I believe she got played out, she probably got tired maybe worn out. The williams sisters still have more trophys in their prime even when they were not in their prime they were better and still better than most players apart from the obvious I would say 5

Having just watched the mens final (the best which I can remember for an awful long time) it just shows how weak the women's game is at the moment .The Williams girls won their matches without breaking sweat. The same cannot be said of Nadal or Federer. The gulf between the two codes just became an ocean. I'm sure that you will see a huge difference in viewing figures between the men's and the women's final as well.

You know, it's only on 606's tennis boards that there is so much slagging off of women's tennis....

You don't see it on the athletics board, for example. I, for one, enjoyed the women's final, and I think it was one of the best I've seen. I see that a journalist in the Guardian had the same view as me:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/jul/08/wimbledon.tennis

He made some very interesting comments....

"In every respect, this was a full-on tennis match between two players sharing not just a family but an equal hunger for another Wimbledon title. Further proof came from the look on Serena's face as she watched her sister lifting the great silver dish. She was simply furious with herself for having failed where, in their two previous meetings in the final of the championship, she had prevailed."

"For once, a packed second Saturday crowd on Centre Court got value for their money even before the doubles players came along to provide light entertainment - or, in the case of Venus and Serena, who re-emerged in the women's doubles a couple of hours later, a demonstration of power play that singed whatever grass remained on the parched court."

"As is increasingly being noted, the Williams sisters adhere to a restricted competition schedule that may frustrate tournament organisers but allows them to live as fully functioning human beings, a useful corrective example to those who believe that hothousing is the way to bring up a champion."

And this one was the best....

"Finally, here's a suggestion for those who think that matches between the sisters are necessarily the victims of some sort of "family decision", as Dementieva foolishly claimed, or "fix", as others more baldly put it. While watching the match on television, try half-closing your eyes and pretending that one of the players is white. That might do the trick."

And, by the way, the Richard Williams who wrote this article is NOT the one the anti-Williams brigade think he is....
