Tour de France Stage 1

comment on the article
Spain's Alejandro Valverde celebrates winning the opening stage of the 2008 Tour de France

Well, what a cracking stage to start the 2008 Tour.

An early breakaway, a steady pursuit by the peloton and a fantastic last climb by Spain's Alejandro Valverde to take the win and the yellow jersey.

David Millar was the best-placed Brit coming home in 11th for a solid start, while Mark Cavendish came home in the peloton.

What did you make of the opening stage? Better than having a prologue to get things going?

Well, looked like SportingNonsense had that wrapped up with his Kirchen prediction until Valverde came from nowhere to blow everyone away.

Great finish from the Spaniard.

I'll be back tomorrow for some more chat if you're around.

Thanks for keeping me company today and hope you enjoyed.

Cheers

Hang on (bit late I know): if were calling Froome British on the strength of his licence then there must be about a dozen Monegasque riders out there (just look at Rasmussen for instance [yes I know he's not in it this year]), meaning there's still a Kenyan in le Tour. Yay!

On a slightly more serious note, if the GB team does come into being we might have a climber (domestique) by the sound of things. More yay!

Lowlandbrit, ive just checked and Froome has a British citizenship - Im not sure what license he has, but the citizenship is what defines the nationality.

Does anybody remember the old introduction to the tv highlights of the tour probably about 10 years ago. All I remember was cartoon bikes and a catchy melody. Can anyone add any detail to my memory?

Well, I was really cut up about the lack of prologue until we got underway. All is forgiven, and I'm looking very much forward to the next three weeks!

Today's stage had its share of jitters - I do believe there were at least 3 pile-ups, although I don't know if we can blame Tour debutants or simply cross-winds.

Fabulous acceleration from Valverde to grab the stage win, and it's nice to see him get off on the right foot. In my mind it remains to be seen whether he can build on last year's experiences enough to mount a really serious challenge, but good luck to him, and I'd be happy to see him do it.

Sure we are missing some "big names" - like every year, so let's wait and see who comes out with a blinder and becomes a new hero.

Footnote - great to see Ti-Vo get KOM jersey ... who can forget his exploits back in 2004?

My man Cadel Evans played it safe and cool, so I look for him to stamp his authority once the race really gets cooking.

The theme tune was written by Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks, that's about all the info I have though.

Unfortunately, until the T de F effectively develops and implements an effective system to eliminate the use of steroids, watching this competition is a waste of time.

It was wonderful to see the Prologue dispensed with. It will make for a much more competitive Tour to my mind.
On a different note. I watched the Race Across America on ITV4 last night. It's the second time that I've seen such a documentary upon this particular competition. What struck me particularly was that it bore more resemblance to the original Tours de France than today's does.
With the 100th edition coming up in a few years, might it not be a good idea to run a race similar to the Race Across America/ original 1903 Tour in tandem with the actual 2013 TdF and, along the original 1903 route?
