Marlon Devonish 400m prospect?

Marlon has been a great athlete over 100m and 200m for many years, he has produced some great performances and helped Great Britain to that fantastic gold medal in Athens 2004.

But can he ever challenge the sub 9.90s (100m) or sub 20.00s (200m) that would make him a real medal chance at the World or Olmypics?.

Marlon has pb's of 10.06s (2007) and 20.19 (2002) so is it time that he did what Katherine Merry did, and swap to the 400m. Marlon has a pb of 46.83 set in 2000, but with the 200m speed i think he could be a sub 45's 400 runner. Marlon runs a fastser 200m that Iwan Thomas and he achieved 44.36s.

What do you think?, could he be a real prospect?

Possible, but risking number one over 200, and perhaps 100 in GB for the chance of succeeding at 400??Many have tried and failed to convert.

It's been mentioned before, however, at this moment his age would be a big factor in him not switching events.

Its certainly an interesting idea - can I ask, has Marlon said anything about this???

You're right KC - that Marlon's times aren't anywhere near good enough to medal at the Olympics or the Worlds, even getting into finals would be difficult...indeed, those times wouldn't get him anything at the Commonwealth games either i.e. Jamaican sprinters et al

A switch to 400m might allow him to move up a notch in terms of competitive edge...and although he is 'getting on a bit', many of the greatest athletes have managed to be really competitive into their thirties...

I would think that within a season of trying at the 400m he would dip under 45secs...

This was posted about two years ago.
I was of the opinion that both Christian Malcolm and Marlon Devonish could have been better 400m runners in world terms than 200m runners.
However short sprinters cannot cope with the workload required to change and the 400m seems to have a lot higher injury rate than the 1 and 2.
They are both however running out of time to make the change and dont expect it is in either of their plans now.

One sprinter that did , with success, was Robbie Brightwell.

I should have posted- a lot of short sprinters (for various reasons)cannot cope with the workload---

If he was going to make that change, he should have done it straight after Athens. I believe Katherine Merry was still somewhat young when she made the switch.

solomon wariso did it most recently, from a slower 200m time at a similar age. he went sub45 seemingly without too much difficulty but didn't really go on to make an impact. agree though i don't see devonish doing it. nor malcolm. also, devonish has most recently gone backwards in the 200m.

I believe Michael Johnson recommended both Christian Malcolm and Marlon Devonish for the 4x 400m team I think that could work ,John Regis was effective

He may well have done but was obviously ignored -pity.
I really think it is now to late for them to make such a big change.
