STAGE ONE / ODDS

Tour de France

Interesting odds on this one:

Valverde is 5/2 favourite & Mc Ewen, Cavendish & Hunter 33/1, 50/1 & 75/1. I know there's a small climb so they're not banking on a sprint finish.

Cancellara & Hushovdt at 10s & 20s look tempting.

Backstedt's not even in the 100/1 and belows so might have an E/W on that.

5/2 Valverde? You can get 7/1 on betfair.

I've just had a little cheeky couple of quid on Pozzato.

A repeat of stage 1 in the Dauphine then. I think Hushovd might just get the better of Valverde this time, however.

ok - last 1.7km @ 6.2%. looking to the spring classics, the 3 winners of hill-top finish classics were valverde, kirchen and cunego. the odds i see for these guys are 7, 13, and 30's resp.

AV might not have the motivation to win - the prestige of a stage win aside, his thoughts lie further down the road, but i guess it will be hard for any pro to soft pedal if they are in contention.

so that leaves kirchen - a good bet, but obviously the value has to be cunego, although maybe he will have the same view as AV.

another hill finisher of note is ricco - 18s - but i'm uncertain of his form.

that said, thor is no slouch up such an incline, and i have to imagine that will be arriving to at todays grand depart in peak condition, and is super value at 40s+.

so there you have it 5 names. if you back all 5 names weighted for the same payout you can get better than 3x return. ex-AV it is better than 5x, and for just DC, RR and TH it is 9x.

so, cue breakaway winner.....

If it comes to a sprint Kirchen would be my pick, although Freire is always dangerous.

Actually, seeing as the course looks good for attackers: anyone know what odds you can get on Gilbert?
