Andy Cole signs (next week!)

Championship Nottingham Forest
comment on the article

Afternoon, everyone!

Just to let you know that this e-mail was sent out by Nottingham Forest this afternoon! It will probably appear in the NEP sometime in August, so please don't be too surprised when it does.

"As a valued supporter, we wanted you to be among the first to know about our latest transfer activity that will see a Premiership legend wearing our colours next season.

We're delighted to announce that former Manchester United, Newcastle and England striker Andrew Cole has agreed to become our fourth summer signing.

Andrew is joining us on a free transfer and it's expected he will sign a one-year contract next week when Colin Calderwood and his players return from a pre-season training camp at the University of Bath.

Andrew has enjoyed a marvellous career, with a Champions League winners' medal and five Premier League titles to his name, but it's clear from the club's discussions with him that he's still passionate about the game and is excited about at long last getting the chance to play for his home-town club.

Colin is understandably delighted to have persuaded a player of Andrew's pedigree to join us as we prepare for our return to the Coca-Cola Championship.

And he has every reason to feel that his squad is now taking shape with Robert Earnshaw, Paul Anderson and Guy Moussi also having checked-in at The City Ground this summer.

They have been getting to know their new team-mates this week after the players reported back for training ahead of the start of the new season, which is now just over a month away."

There was also a bit of stuff about season tickets going on sale from tomorrow, so cynics amongst us may say that this was just a marketing ploy to attract more season ticket purchases. I am sure this is not the case, and is just coincidence.

What was Mark Arthur's much celebrated phrase about promotion a couple of years ago, and do you think we will hear something equally daft in the next couple of days?

What a patronising post. A lot of people would have said that Dele Adebola was a pile of crap but he still knocked a few in for you last season. Who said Cole would score lots of goals and who is to say we will not sign more strikers?

We lost one good player (Commons) who we hardly let leave as he was out of contract, and the rest were mediocre.

I keep hearing people complaining about AC's age! He is the second highest goal scorer in Premier League history, one of Man U's highest European goal scorers of all time and holds the Joint record (with Shearer) for most goals in a Prem season. The guy has great awareness, movement and is a world class finisher. If he gets fully fit, this is a SUPERB signing. Along with Earnshaw we (Forest) now have two players (or maybe 3 if Tyson stays fit) capable of top scoring in the CCC.

Most of the teams promoted to the premier league have at least one player over 35 (e.g Dean windass). I must have seen dozens of fans complaining that we lack experience. I'll bet some of the same moaners will say 36 is too old. Stop bleating and get behind Calderwood and Doughty you lot for Clough's sake!

Norwich Fan in peace.

Thank god you have signed him, we were really worried he would end up at our place!

its a long term signing i'm sure, ok, so he's old, past it, whatever you want to say, he'll still play off the bench, start for 60/70 minutes, but think of the longer picture, coaching role after the season, what an inspriation to the kids that would be to have star they used to watch and admire, I think CC's invested in the future on this one...

We have Nathan Tyson who is probably the quickest striker in this division.
Earnie who is a proven goal scorer in this division, as our main strike partners.

We then have a couple of classy looking youngsters ready to come through and Andy Cole to come on from the bench stick a few in and direct the youngsters.

Add this to the fact that Cole scored 15 last year was it? And all this whilst being injured for quite a while.....

I'd say on paper he's a pretty good back up signing.

And I'm sure the fact that he's back in his home town will give him an extra 10% fitness.

I don't have a problem with this at all, we need the experience around the place.

Forest will have one of the youngest squads in the div if you exclude Cole.... How can anyone argue that it's not a sensible signing?

I really wish Andrew well, he deserves another good season with plenty of goals and a few good assists of balls he would have turned into goals a few years back. I hope he still has it in him. He did not for us.

As long as Old man Cole doesn't score at Pride Park or in the return fixture, I'll be happy.

Hopefully, Earnshaw won't either and both will flop.

Thanks for Commons. Hope The Rams can get another 3-0 at PP.

Nice to see you back up, I've sorely missed our rivalry!!

UP THE RAMS.
