Manchester City captain Richard Dunne has today penned a new four-year contract with the Club.

The 28-year-old defender was linked with summer moves away from the City of Manchester Stadium, but following talks with Manager Mark Hughes, the Irish international swiftly signed a deal that ties him to the Blues until at least 2012.

After completing the paperwork, Dunne exclusively told mcfc.co.uk: “I’m delighted with it.

“My first priority is, was and always has been to stay at City because I’ve enjoyed it so much and I feel really settled here.

“When Mark Hughes got the job I think everyone was really pleased and I was thrilled that he seemed to make it a priority to sort my contract out. I’m delighted to be able to stay.”

City Manager Hughes himself added: "I'm delighted with the outcome and Richard is a really important player for us.

“It was one of my priorities when I took the job that I made sure that he was one of the players we needed to keep."

And Dunne revealed that his City stay didn’t take long to agree once Hughes had taken over as Blues boss: “As soon as he did we started to talk. It was literally a couple of days and it was all done and dusted.

“I’m pleased now that it’s all been signed and sealed and I can relax a bit more now and concentrate on the season ahead.”

Paul McGrath is in another league by comparison.... Dunne can only dream of attaining such comparative status...

I am not slating Dunne or what he has done for us over the last few years I just think now we are on the verge of bigger and better things and players like Dunne can only take you so far. It all comes down to your ambition and how far you want City to go...like I said earlier if you are happy with mid-table then Dunne is the man to take you there. Look how Torres skinned him for the only goal of the game at Anfield last season.

good decision hughes, if anyone wants to ever meet dunne, your sure to see him with his grey haired mrs and kids the dukes bar on a sunday in castlefield. I stood at the bar and went dunney lad, the only one to say anything. What a gentleman, he bought my drink.

I'm a MANU fan and have to say he wouldn't get in the squad at OT. However, I think he's the best signing City will make all summer.

If Wes Brown can make the FIRST TEAM then Dunne would be 1st choice.

Richard Dunne is one of our best we have, hes a great leader, strong, a role model. brilliant hes signed a new contract. young players need players like him in the team to progress, without Dunne, Micah Richards would not be the player he is. all city fans commenting on him being a bad captain and poor footballer are completely wrong and im ashamed to have fans like them supporting city.

Dermot... don't you hate it as a pedant when you are just plain wrong? Ireland plus Great Britain are the British Isles - that's why the British Lions include Ireland's rugby players.

Maybe you are from the British Isles and you hadn't even realised?

Anyway Dunney really is the cement that holds the defence together. Not stylish and elegant but always committed to the City cause. Thank God that he's staying.

he's been one of the most consistant centre backs in the prem for a few years now. glad he's stayed with us, long may he be under-rated, the club captain, player of the year 3 years running and Mr consistant. Excellent signing.

I'm over the (blue) moon that Richard Dunne has signed a new contract for City. Yes, we all know he went off the rails a bit (for a short time) way back in the dim and distant past but he was given another chance and has worked hard ever since to prove his worth. My son plays centre back (U12's) and it's Richard Dunne he looks up to and aspires to be - Dunne is his hero and mine too, and an excellent role model. biggrin

Dunne is the most consistent player we've got and one of the most under-rated defenders in the Premier League. He's a great leader and a fantastic role model for the younger players in the team. I'm over the blue moon he's staying - like all true City fans.
