Zimbabwe pull out of World Twenty20

Twenty20 Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has almost solved the latest cricketing crisis by pulling out of T20 world cup voluntarily.

"We have decided to pull out in the larger interests of the game," Peter Chingoka, the chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, told Cricinfo. "We have been informed that the British government may not grant visas to our players, and that situation may prevail during the Twenty20 World Cup. We don't want to be gatecrashers."

Zimbabwe will retain their status as Full Member of the ICC and receive funding as usual. They will also receive their full participation fee for the tournament.

Seems like all "morality" talks by ECB was revolving around money loss if T20 world cup was moved. Now that Zim has agreed to pull out the issue of Zimbabwe's membership is done for now.

It would have been preferable if the ECB had negotiated an arrangement whereby the BCCI leased Zimbabwe Cricket's vote for X million U.S. dollars per annum, as that vote is what the BCCI is really interested in, not cricket matches against the Zimbabwe team (indeed it just cancelled a tour of Zimbabwe) or the development of Zimbabwean cricket.

Better still, if the BCCI paid the money directly into Robert Mugabe's Swiss bank account, the moral bankruptcy of what it is doing would be laid bare for all to see.

Mugabe recently is blaming Gordon Brown for creating Zim's economic problems !!

You think Mugabe wanted Zim to play in England in 2009 after his recent moaning about UK !!

I bet he doesn't and he is the one who has cancelled the tour as first it would be mighty hypocritical to blame England and Gordon Brown and then the team he is the Chairman of turns up to play cricket there less than a year later! and second = of course they lose generally so he would not then be able to claim England rubbish and Zim great ??

The ICC should have expelled Zimbabwe and all other ICC members should leave the ICC until they do so!
As it stands, Great Britain is _still_ a member of a 'club' that also has Zimbabwe as a member, and that is simply not acceptable.

There are many countries in the World who dont follow human rights ... why FIFA and IOC dont ban all those countries? If situation in Zimbabwe dont change till 2012 will UK government refuse to grant visa to Zimbabwe olympic team? If not then why discrimination with Cricket?? why FIFA is not talking about removing Zimbabwe status? its just a common sense, dont mix sports and politics. China violates human rights but no one wants to boycott the olympic. ECB wasted time and resources in the ICC meeting to discuess a senseless topic.

This JUDGEMENT is not to do with cricket it is to do with human rights. The situation in Zimbabwe is appalling. If we came out to kill apartheid (good move chaps) we can also be resonsible for killing any other kind of prejudice. Zimbabwe play when they do so free fair and above board.

Allow the Zimbawian players to play and pay them directly using ICC funds. The zimbabwian cricket players are barely getting any money already so dont take away their sport as well as their livelyhood. Although i do agree something should be done about Mugabe... we went to war for less in Iraq.

This has to be the BCCI. The US is suspended and gets no funds because it is "chronically dysfunctional". Spot on. Everything in US society for that matter. But it proves they can do the right thing, when there's no financial motivation. Other than that it's about keeping the money flowing.

Feckless chappies all. You pay 70 quid/head for a one day ticket to an LV match, and you don't have any power over the ECC? Like women wittering on about how they can't get what they want.

If you would give up your creature comforts and vote with your feet, you could have anything you want! All the wittering on is about the fact that you'd like to be able to sit on your arse, business as usual, and the ICC do the right thing. That doesn't happen.
