Jenson on the new FIA 'tax' proposal

Formula One
comment on the article

The FIA now have another plan -"To 'tax' drivers 15% of their income to compete in the Formula One world championship."

"An FIA spokesman said: "We are happy to discuss the matter with the drivers.

"We can look again at the way the super licence is set. The FIA would consider a flat, higher rate for those in tax exile.""

Tax exile Jenson wonders "What's the super licence got to do with where we live?"

"It's a licence to go racing, the same as a road licence. It's about being capable of driving and controlling your car at a certain speed, and everyone in Formula One can do that.

"So there's no reason why it should be anything more than what it was in the past. I don't see what difference it should make as to how many points you get, or how well you do in the championship. I don't see how it should change how much you pay for a super licence.

Seems to me that the FIA is now actively pushing F1 out.

If I buy a can of beans I pay the same as the next bloke (M/F for the benefit of the PC lunatics) in the same shop.
How can my income be relevant whether I'm in a queue with a millionaire or a beggar? Same product, same service, so ... same price !! It's not rocket science.

I am sure there is a point where the F1 drivers will say enougf is enough and not pay Max's tax.

If at least, the FIA would send the tax' money back to the country-of-origin for the driver, as retained tax; and then the driver, after declaring tax in his country, he could - might - get some money back from his FIA's contribution.

Sneaky! Classic tactics for quelling rebellions! Suggest something fairly draconian, and all of a sudden the original proposal gets accepted!

I have to feel sorry for Button. I mean, £17k for his licence last year! Surely he'll now be struggling to pay for the TWO private jets he recently ordered! winkeye

I'd have more sympathy if the marshalls threatened a strike.

"Sorry matey! I know you're stuck but it costing me just TOO much to come out here and drag you out of the kitty litter when you've made a Horlicks of it. Have a nice day!" winkeye

When I read this, it made me think it was an April Fools joke, only wrong time of year. Exactly what legal basis would a club like the FIA have to tax the income of a participant, in place of the government of the individual's country of residence. Can't see how they could make that legally stick, so presumably bully boy tactics to make the drivers feel happy with just the massive hike in fees.
What exactly do the FIA need with all this extra money, isn't $100m still burning a hole in the bank account.
If this is another of Max's brainwaves, then he should be retired quickly. So ironic isn't it, he's been banging on about controlling costs in F1. Physician, heal thyself!
