Annan in!

Scottish League
comment on the article

The decision has been reached and Annan are the new club in the Scottish Football League. What does everyone think of that? Is it the right decision for the game in Scotland?

Congratulations to Annan Athletic. I think that adding a new club to the SFL will freshen it up a bit.

I do agree that there needs to be a pyramid system in place, my idea is a round-robin tournament between the side that finisjed bottom of Division 3 and the winners of the Highland League, East of Scotland Football League and the South of Scotland Football League with the winners going into the SFL. This way the non-league champions will have something else to play for and the bottom side in Division 3 know there is a consequence for finishing bottom.

I say this as a Englishman but I follow all the British Leagues.

PS can we have Berwick Rangers back in the English League?

well done to Annan (with sorrow for Gretna, incredible effort by them lets not forget what they achieved and it was plenty)but to Annan good luck....The SFL should have automatic relegation and promotion to and from div3 then clubs would have better motivation to stay up in div3 some of the sides are really poor...to ALBION ROVERS best of LUCK for the coming season, respect sogoss,Perth Western Australia(ps GET SOME AUSSIE PLAYERS)

If the SFL teams were trying to avoid teams that might beat them, how do you explain the fact that Cove Rangers, the current Highland League champions, were only excluded in the final vote?

To be honest, had it not been for the self-promotion of Brookes Mileson, Gretna would probably still be a fairly successful and well-run 3rd or 2nd division team pulling in crowds commensurate with their position.

There is no reason to suppose that Annan, a town with a population 4 times greater than Gretna cannot do likewise and whereas the other teams all had promises of facilities in the long term, Annan were the only team to have the facilities in place.

The demise and relocation of Meadowbank Thistle should lay to rest any thoughts people have of a third Edinburgh team being sustainable.

Personally, I would have preferred to see Cove Rangers getting the place as they at least had some claim based on last season's performance. But with ICT, Peterhead and Elgin already representing the Highlands, perhaps it is fair to admit another Southern team.

Finally, to all those who point out the geographical closeness of QotS and Stranraer, have a think about how close Brechin(pop 7,000), Montrose(pop 10,000), Forfar (pop 13,000), and Arbroath(pop 20,000) are to each other.

I think the Midlothian Thistle argument is a fairly weak one. Spartans FC has been around long enough to show its no "flash in the pan". Furthermore, whilst being based in Edinburgh brings you into competition with Hears and Hibs, the opportunities for growth a far greater.

That is not to mention the fact that Meadowbank Thistle was right by Easter Road. The north of Edinburgh has just a big a population concentration as East and West... Would have taken quite a bit of time mind you to drum up support...

Wow, I didnt see this one coming, I thought Spartens would get it! well, Annan must be well set up (despite being 19 points behind Spartens), good luck to them and comisarations to Cove, Spartens and the others.
Good Luck Annan, I hope some Gretna fans go along, being so close, If Gretna don't reform in some shape!

Congrats to all at Annan. I must admit I was hoping for one of the clubs in/closer to Edinburgh so that the mighty berwick Rangers could have a "derby".
Never mind. I have already pecilled in a trip to Annan for one of the Berwick matches and hope that Annan allow away/tourist supporters to use what appear to be excellent social club facilities.

Well done again and "keep trying" to the failed applicants as anyone of you would I am sure be a breath of fresh air

is it true than Annan Athletic obtained a new stand through the generosity of their chairman several years ago? I once played on their ground it was a right old dump, wooden shed for dressing rooms behind one of the goals,a bar that you could fit about 20 people in and a pitch no better than cringle fields or Boggart Hole Clough,to add to that I was punched in the face right in front of the referee ended up in hospital for two nights so I hope they have cleaned their act up since....
