Does Flintoff merit automatic recall?

comment on the article

Freddie has been having a nondescript season with Lancs this year... he hasn't done too well with either bat or ball. Also, the current England seamers are doing a very good job, winning games vs NZ despite the batting not being upto scratch. So, should Flintoff walk back into he team as a bowler; as if he has some god-given right?

Talking of bowlers, both Mahmood and Jones have done very well for their counties in recent times; the former clocking 93mph + on a consistent basis. For some strnage reason, Mahmood was ill-treated during the Ashes tour, and has never been considered for an England berth at all. In the recent Lancs game, Mahmood had a 5-fer; but Flintoff went wicketless.

Should selection be on the basis of form and merit, or just about picking any Centrally Contracted Non-Injured player, whether he is on form or not?

Thoughts please!

Those Of You Who Doubts Jones' Pace Your Wrong. He Isnt Quite As Fast But He Can Hit The 90+ Mark. He Averages About 86-88 Now.

general rubbish from sca, mahmood makes one fiffer or lancs and suddenly he deserves and england place yet you completly fail to mention freds fifty in the same game which is a promising sign and the fact that fred went for about three an over and constantly beat the bat again and again, yet wou would mahmood took wickets at a more expensive rate so the person who critersise jimmy for being expensive while taking wickets is secreatly a fan of the poor mans anderson, well fine!!

Englands best test team if freddie is batting and bowling for me is:
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan (c)
KP
Bell
Flintoff
Foster (wk)
Broad
Sidebottom
Jones
Panesar

i'd go with that Englishmadman!
I'm not andersons biggest fan i think he is VERY exspensive. But admitidly has been getting wickets recently. So probably does deserve a place.

Averages from 4 series in last 12 months for 5 key batsmen in Eng & SA teams:
England
Vaughan 37.9
Pieterson 43.6
Bell 37.3
Cook 36.7
Collingwood 31.9

South Africa
Smith 64.4
Kallis 67.8
De Villiers 57.5
Amla 40.5
Prince 31.5

Principal observations:
England have no chance in the upcoming Test Series
So much for England's vaunted batting line up all averaging over 40
Collingwood!!
Maybe England have a chance if we get down to Prince but then he is followed by De Villiers & Boucher, England have Collingwood & Ambrose at 6 & 7!!

Alternative observation:

The England players averages over the last twelve months are below their career averages, while the South African's are above their career averages.

Therefore the law of averages dictates that the England players are due to score higher, and the South African's lower.

There is a saying that you are only as good as your last match.

There is a truer one though; You are only as good as your next match.

flintoff is still one of england's best bowlers - and always plays better when playing for his country. once fit, he should be given a chance to prove himself - come on freddie!

Flintoff is not one of Englands best bowlers. Statistics dont lie. His bowling this season has been average and his batting woeful. Jones deserves a place well before Flintoff, as does Pattinson based on figures. How else can you judge a player? This talk about him being "class" is as silly as saying Boycott should be playing because he is "class". Flintoff has got to prove himself. Until then there is no place for him ..... even if the ECB is quite happy to support out of form County standard players like Collingwood.

'A long tail but so what? It's time for the batsmen to deliver. England have been relying on their bowlers to dig them out of the mire for far too long. Even 2005 was like that. '

Yet Cook apart we have the same 'top 5' as in the Ashes 2005!!

That means other than Cook we have blooded no new batsmen - doesn't that say something if one thinks the present top 5 isn't up to it ????
