Double standards? Wimbledon is a singles event not a team event - he and all the other participants are playing for themselves - they get the cup they get the prize money - it is nothing to do with playing for your nation or umbrella body.

Proposal - 5 set matches for womens semifinals and finals in big tournaments

1. 5 set matches are sometimes judged too arduous for women.
Apart from the fact that women nowadays run marathons, compete in hammer throwing and weight lifting etc,
it is of course the case that in hitting the ball less hard such matches are no more arduous for women than men, on a relative scale.
Also, Masters tournaments have already involved 5 set matches for the top women players,
and it's the top players (in a given tournament) that reach the semifinals and final.

2. The argument equal pay, equal performance is often made.
While one can wish to debate the extent that should mean more equal court time,
it is of course at the semifinal and final stage that the players make the most money.
so it's reasonable to expect more performance time for the public, than with earlier matches.

3. At the semifinal and final stages the best players (in the tournament) meet,
so the matches should as a rule be more entertaining than in earlier rounds.
Longer matches at that point should be of greater interest to the public,
as well as being more fair in producing a winner.

4. In the men's game a 2 set lead does not always mean reaching 3 sets first, and the same
would apply particularly at semifinal and final stages for women.
The argument, which has had validity, that there is a greater gulf between the best and the rest in the women's game,
mean that while in earlier rounds 2-0 might just become routine 3-0 set wins,
that is less likely when the best players meet each other in the later stages.

5. Scheduling time is always a problem in big Grand Slam tournaments,
especially with open air tournaments like Wimbledon prone to rain delays.
While womens' 5 set matches throughout, especially if both singles and doubles were involved,
would obviously increase such problems, that does not hold if only later stage matches are affected: while singles
are probably of greater interest, it could be done for doubles also.

6. The idea of longer matches only in final stages is not new,
some men's tennis tournaments have already operated on having the best of 5 only at that point.
It's also a common feature of other sports like snooker or darts, or indeed at racquet sport tournaments involving badminton, squash or table tennis.

I wonder what the press will say tomorrow and tonight at the News @ 10 on BBC & ITV & Sky News etc. (DONG)

Well?

Keep hyping Murray up like after the Gasquet Match - it will only be his downfall.

Besides - Forget talking about Murray - why arent there any of you praising Nadal? Nadal was superb and cud win it this year. Probably not tho i wud love it to be a Nadal vs Safin Final.

Does anyone really want to watch more women's tennis though? That is surely the argument. Two sets is often enough for most people.

The class of Nadal exposed the lack of depth in Murray's game.

Murray should focus on playing the game with his racket and not rely too much on his throat. No tennis lover wants to see a player winning on the centre court based on what decibels his screams score...
