Argyleitis

Championship Plymouth Argyle

The recent 'debate' going on between the optimists and the so called 'negatives/moaners' has reminded me of a certain thread that was on here a few months back when our play off push was falling apart.
I think it was Navydiver, a 606er that used to post on here regularly, who coined the phrase "Acceptance of mediocrity."

I think that now more than ever we are seeing that in full effect. As someone new to Argyle (only 2 seasons) I see things in a very different view to many other posters on here and along the lines of Navydiver's observations I see there is a virus over the club that I will call Argyleitis.
The main symptom of Argyleitis is as previously diagnosed by Navydiver, "acceptance of mediocrity". Now this virus has fully infected the club and has spread like wildfire through a vast majority of the fanbase. As a relatively new fan I am not infected and I am free of the virus and point blank refuse to accept mediocrity.
Thousands of fans and the board/manager just seem to hold their hands up and say "oh well" or "That's just the way it is at Argyle, it's always been like it and always will", "it's our location", "It's in the lap of the gods". That is all acceptance of mediocrity or Argyleitis.
I refuse to accept it, no way. What I would like to see is a manager or director stand up and say "I will not accept that there is nothing that can be done and I will change our fortunes by........................."
Cue all the ideas submitted by non-infected fans such as getting the kids in free, increasing Argyle players interaction with the community, raise the clubs profile etc.

I believe that Holloway was the best chance we had of growing but Holloway sensed that Argyleitis was too ingrained for him to cure. During his spell the popularity of Argyle improved, a cult aura surrounded the club, we had positive media attention, we had great players. Holloway had grand ambitions but he ultimately detected that the rest of the club didn't share that ambition and drive so it was either succumb to Argyleitis or move on. He chose to move on as have all our best players who have also detected Argyleitis and fled before they become stained by the virus. Even though Holloways move turned sour for him he has repeatedly said he has no regrets at leaving Plymouth. Why?? because he knows that Argyle are not going anywhere because they accept mediocrity.

The optimists will probably call me mad but it's only because they're infected!

Devonsurfer, just wait until the beginning of the season before lambasting the team and management. I and a lot of other fans are expecting an announcement tomorrow, and possibly one or two more before the end of the week, let alone the start of the season. How come you know quite so much about Luggy's targets, anyway? This strikes me as the attitude of someone who has expressed an opinion (rightly or wrongly) and is carried away into greater and greater pessimism and nay-saying in order to retalliate against those who express a different view. Cool your beans, we all know the finances aren't as good as some other teams, but the potential negatives far outweigh the positives in your 'one season wonder' approach. Call it negativity if you like, but I see it as common sense in a club such as ours to plan, rather than splurge until promotion, relegation or administration, which seems to be your only alternative to the current situation.

Oh, and trying to fend off criticism (well, debate) by pre-emptively dismissing anyone with a different opinion to yours as suffering from 'argyleitis' is frankly pathetic and juvenile. Grow up, look around, and try to acknowledge that Argyle didn't spring out of the ground the minute you lent them your support, nor that you are the only person who want us to get to the promised land. I'm pretty sure that, at least, is one thing which unites everyone here.

I'd have thought that you boys have kinda had your high, reached the peak of that which you could realistically hope to achieve. I'd say well done to you for reaching the top half of the champ and lets hope you don't slip back down into true mediocrity of league 1 football and God forbid league 2!

Lol.

Devon, when you've finished with your fishing rod, can I borrow it.

If you're not fishing then take a REAL look Argyle and their recent history.

There are a couple of ways of looking at this, and as you openly admit, you are looking at PAFC through the eyes of a new fan which is somewhat naieve of you, Devonsurfer.

Rather than considering Argyle to be "mediocre", why not consider them to be high flying? Where would you prefer us to be? Doing well in the Championship (the second bleddy tear of English Football for goodness sake!) or flyin high in league 1 with the foxes, or beating everything that moves in League 2?

I, for one, would take your idea of "mediocrity" in the Championship any day of the week. I also rather be mid table in the Championship than getting beat day in day out in the prem, and I bet lots of longer serving PAFC fans would too.

Perhaps we should come up with a name for the disease you are suffering from?! How about "Dillusions of Grandeuritis" or D.O.G for short?!

Argyleitis or not, what is worrying is lack of depth. And not just lack of depth in quality. Straightforward lack of depth. When we get to Christmas, one or two suspended, one or two injured, one or two out of form we're going to playing the kids. PS might himself need to register.

Are you kidding me Kernowking ?? Come on, ask any Argyle fan whether they would wish to have a season in the sun or spend their days in Blackpool or Barnsley.........please !! Give me Old TRafford, Stamford Bridge, The Emirates Stadium, Anfield........need I name more ?? I'm sitting here next to my ex-partner (you can feel sorry for me now !!) who is a Hull City fan !! She cannot wait for the new season to start....looking at the fixture list, planning trips to Goodison, Villa Park etc.....and yes, I'm bloody jealous !!

In relation to the thread that the much maligned Surfer started, there is a point here. We do lack ambition. Of course, we do.

Think. Let's all think. What if.......what if we had actually spent slightly more than £500k for a striker from Cardiff Bleedin' City ?? Look how high flying we were. Look at the fact that the teams going up achieved the lowest total in points ever to get promoted to the Premiership. Look at the position we were in come January. We blew our chance. Totally.

I won't be over critical of the board. I think they haven't don't a bad job.......BUT there is such as thing as being a bit mean with money and I'm sorry, but they are exactly that. We needed to spend more than we did. We didn't. Sides like Hull City and Stoke City did. The results speak for themselves. I'm not asking for £10m to be spent - but what about spending the money we have made in players sold ?? I don't think as a fan of 30 years that it is much to ask. Is it ??

Sure, it would be nice to visit these places now and again, but we can do that in the FA Cup (maybe)!

We may need to agree to disagree here, but how about we discuss this at Christmas with your ex who will no doubt be in a pit of despair at being beaten week in week out? be really interesting to hear how she feels...

Personally, I hate loseing, be it PAFC, me playing football, work or whatever...and PAFC would lose lots if we were in the prem, and that would drive me nuts.

My cousin is a Derby fan, and believe me, he even got sick of being beat (although they did always keep singing!).

Talking about the board...this is a business and they want to make money, either for themselves, the shareholders or anyone else with an interest in PAFC or any other club. Selling your assets is a great way to make money, adn what a surprise, we are selling our best players!

Lets see what happens, eh? Still gonna be a great seasson supporting PAFC every step of the way!

Clearly written by someone who hasn't been at Home Park "packed" with around 4500 people watching Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Darlington or Rotherham (No disrespect intended to these clubs). Too many fans need a reality check: We have made progress in each of the last 7 seasons. A feat achieved by no other club in recent years!! Look supporter up in the Oxford English..
