Calzaghe in Vegas

Yes another Calzaghe thread.

Just seen that the Jones fight has been confirmed for 20/09/08 MGM Grand.

I'm also of the mind that he should have gone for Pavlik but now this is happening i think it's time to embrace the final fight of these two greats. Looks like they will both be promoting themselves which can only be a good thing as well.

Looks like they're lining Froch up to face Taylor as well.

Peoples thoughts? (though i think i know most).

"An over the hill Hopkins? An over-rated Lacy? A straight forward Kessler? No one of any real class"

----------------------

This attitude sums up why there's no point in Calzaghe fighting Pavlik.

Whoever he fought, the detractors would still be rubbishing his achievements. When in reality the undefeated champ for a DECADE has nothing more to prove.

In any case, Pavlik is grossly overrated by people who don't have a lot of technical boxing knowledge, simply becasue of his bang-bang style. He is not, for example, as good as Kessler. Why should Calzaghe have to prove himself against a lesser fighter, having fought better?

"These people areen't world statesmen or anything, they're just boxers - professional entertainers... SPORT IS NOT REAL LIFE!"

------------------

Erm... it's closer to "real life" than politics. laugh

The legacy of a "world statesman" is usually one of hypocrisy, greed and shame.

Give me a boxer any day. ok

Look at the way Jones boxes and look at the way Pavlik boxes. Jones although no longer at the standards of his incredible former self is a tricky customer with a great deal of intelligance and incredible accuracy of punches. Pavlik is a tall version of Mikkel Kessler, he isnt particularly fast, he has success in terms of accuracy but has yet to fight a credible opponant and again his power in my opinion is questionable as he has only done it in a smaller, weaker division than Calzaghe has dominated. He is'nt particularly intellegant, very standard, come forward, straight up fighter. His height and reach make him difficult for the bums he fights to cope with but Calzaghe would take him to school. So would Jones for that matter. Pavlik has not fought the names to deserve Calzaghe, and his coach is desperate to try to trash talk his way into a payday that quite frankly his fighter has not earned.

Joe would beat Pavlik really quite easily. No arguement! Also a beating from Calzaghe could damage Pavliks confidence and ruin his career. Case in point was Lacey. He took a fearful battering, he was utterly humiliated and has never been the same again. The poor lad is defo gonna be remembered, but for all the wrong reasons! Pavlik looks like an average boxer with a big punch. I doubt Joe could actually get motivated to fight this guy.

RJJ is clearly a more skilled ring master than Pavlik. But Joe's already had his 'old man Vagas superfight' with Hopkins.

That in itself wasn't a great fight – it was appealing because Joe was outclassed and Hopkins exposed quite a few truths about his style.

I don't want too see Joe in another fight like that.

I think an RJJ contest will be very similar ie. RJJ putting Calzaghe to boxing school for the first six rounds, before Calzaghe's slightly better youth/stamina/slapping does enough to earn him a dubious draw.

Why doesn't Joe put his three SM belts on the line – like he should be doing as a champion – against a guy who's also never lost?

Why the hell should boxing be about the money of a big Vegas RJJ fight?

It should be the action in the ring that appeals most and, for me and most other fight fans, a Pavlik fight will be a more exciting tear-up.

What happened to the good old days when fighters put their belts before non-title, money-orientated Vegas supershites?

JC and RJJ isnt a foregone conclusion because anything can happen and you never no what RJJ will turn up or what JC will turn up for that matter.

But RJJ is a very kind man in his old age for letting boxers have such a legendary boxer be on their CVS. I bet JC is very thankful.

Why does everyone think that Pavlik is that dangerous for Calzaghe. He annihiliated Gary Lockett, but on a good day so could my nan.

Pavlik is extremely talented and if it wasn't JC's last fight, it would have been a great fight, and one I personally imagine would follow a Kessler Vs Calzaghe storyline. But getting excited about beating someone who trains in the same gym as JC is silly, because Lockett is nowhere near the same class.

Yeah. Nobody was impressed with the stopping of Miaranda and Taylor, but when he stopped Lockett the world took notice.
