Is Jewell in a 'lose-lose' situation?

comment on the article

The transfer window 'Proper' opens next tuesday, and then all Paul Jewell and Adam Pearson's 'behind the scenes hardwork since January' will be allowed to come to fruition.

BUT, I think most of us will end up slightly or even greatly UNDERwhelmed by signings Jewell brings in!

I know this is unfair, but cos we put up with total dross last season, we accepted it because we were consistently told that "we will bring in quality".

Quality?? How many players would you describe as 'QUALITY'??

I'm sat racking my brains, thinking of potential signings, that are available, realistic, willing to come to Derby and within our transfer/wage budget....and I'm struggling to come up with any! I'm only one person, but i regard myself as a pretty knowledgable football fan, but i also notice no one else can think of any either...

My only hope is the fact that i'd never heard of Baiano, Eranio, Stimac, Willems, Wanchope NOR Asanovic before they came to play for Derby!

Would players of that calibre come here? YES, but only if they are currently playing in 3rd rate eastern european league!

I eagerly anticipate seeing what Jewell can unearth, he has managed to find some unknown quality and take them to Wigan!

But i can imagine next week hearing of a signing, being told he's 'quality' but thinking, "he aint that good!"

Ellington in "I promise to score goals boast".... now where have I heard that before?

As you know he joined Watford for big money in August, and flopped. Blame it on Ramadan, blame it on not being fit / not enough games, blame it on other players / the manager. The only thing he didn't blame his poor form on was the fat blob in the mirror, AKA Nathan Ellington.

Having seen plenty of his games last season, he was a shocker. He was overweight and had no fitness. He was barely able to move to take up a position anywhere near the goal.

Basically he was very lucky to score the 4 goals he did, from memory there were 2 tap ins from 6 yards, an embarrassing 20 yard daisy cutter that the keeper let in and 1 decent finish.

He is now said to prefer a more "withdrawn" striking role, probably brought on by not being able to run enough.

One thing you need to be aware of is Ramadan begins in early September this year, so just when the season is getting going and you guys are wondering how you'll do Nathan will be next to useless.

Honestly you are welcome to him. Watford have lost a lot of money on him, and we need to move on and concentrate on being competitive in a league which will be a big challenge this year.

As for Jordan Stewart, he likes to be known as "the joker", there really is nothing more to add.

Yes Watford are in for a tough season. When your manager of 3 years states that Watford need to "start again", you wonder what that really means. Why has Boothroyd let the side decline to that extent? And where did the £50M go?

As for Ellington, Jewell may be able to get the best out of him AKA kick up the backside. The shock for me was I remembered Ellington as a robust, mobile striker capable of being an all round player. But what we got was a fat lazy expensive waster.

Basically as a Watford support I feel we'll be battling in the lower half of the table this season. I personally believe Ellington will do better at Derby playing in front of bigger crowds etc etc... I just don't think Watford played to his strengths last season, and feel Derby County would be more suited to him.

It said in the Sun today that Anthony Gardener was going to stoke for 2mil. Maybe he could be a player we could go for. I know stoke are in prem but i doubt they'll be there longer than a season. Jewell might be able to convince him that derby is a better club to come to, a club with a future, whos chairmen want to see the club in the top half of the premiership.

Mostyn, you say you are a knowledgable football fan and then say you had never heard of Eranio before he signed for Derby? Is that true?

I just hope that what you are saying about the signings isn't right though. I am very pessimistic about Derby's chance of getting promotion again this season.

I,m going to buck the trend here. I am an optimistic Derby Supporter and proud of it. There its out, God I feel better now.
Paul Jewell is doing what he is paid the big bucks to do, wheel and deal, take a gamble, have a punt. To date he has only spent one fee of any significance, that was on Young Liam Dickinson from Stockport County and I,m tipping him to take the championship by storm.

Lets look at the rest, Duke and Stewart on loans and free transfers, fit and motivated could be goals galore. Kris Commons from Forest on a free, hungry goal getting , creative midfielder, then there is the superb Martin Albrectson, Connoly, all action Paul Green, young steven Davis and Aussie Ruben Zadkovich all on free transfers and out of contracts.
Paul Jewell is looking at players that are hungry for their shot at the premiership and dominantly British. As things stand at the moment Jewell has gained somewhere around £4m including the impending Pearson deal.

So we are looking at a strike force of Liam Dickenson, Duke Ellington, steven Davis and also the fact that we have yet to see the best of Emanuel Villa who should cope extremely well at this level. We are still looking for another striker and an attacking midfielder, why the heck should I not be optimistic and proud, last season is just that, History ..lets move on and start talking about the buzz around the ground, lets put some pride back in the Park!

All fair comment, but how about letting things build a bit, how about only splashing out 2 or 3 million on a striker when they are actually worth it! there is no doubt he has dosh, but we actually have a manager who is spending prudently and does not think that the more wedge you throw at a deal the more likely it is to succeed.Lets not put pressure on the boss, the board or ourselves before a ball is even kicked, that is a short cut to disaster.Lets get it right this time.
