Defeat snatched form the jaws of victory

One-day internationals England
comment on the article

Is it just me or does this series look like a wooden-spoon competition? - and what a farcical finish with an international professional sportsman acting like a schoolboy and so missing an easy run out? The pundits keep on trying to talk this team up but actions speak louder than words. I think that we have, overall, got better players than the New Zealanders but they raise thier game and we do not.

Why are we all benchmarking ourselves against whether NZ behaved badly on some other occasion. That's shifting the goalposts (excuse the mix of sports there). By that argument then, if we'd bowled the last ball underarm yesterday, that would have been alright because someone else did it before. The argument seems to have shifted from whether it was unsporting to whether it was unsporting against NZ?

Cullodenha - what a tool u r. "Ra ra" rugby and cricket. Not soccerball, that's a "girls game" I like a proper mans game. Like rowing.

The funny thing is that the people who actually play these games have a respect for each other as fellow sportsmen.

But the public school bVm boys who use these sports as a social tool like to think there's a massive difference.

Cricketers play hard and in this case Collingwood got carried away and made a bad decision - he should have called him back.

But if I was out on the pitch at that time I'd have said "this is for Murali!" and let them cry all the way back to the pavillion...

How can people want KP as captain is beyond me. He is a South African and should not even be playing for England. I for one will never ever support him while he is at the crease. As for Collingwood, he is a disgrace regarding the decision.Heat of the moment-boll*&s. He could have recalled Grant before he left the field of play.

T_One, I can agree with that, reading the news here in NZ, Collie got the suspension he was expecting, its a shame but such are the rules. I thought he could not have handled the aftermatch apology any better..I still respect him as a decent guy!!

I couldn't agree more with sg8122. I can't believe the criticism of Collingwood, he did absolutely 100% the correct thing, and any captain who wouldn't is a fool. The media are totally blowing this out of all proportion. I hate to say it but it's typical of the Kiwi's and their squeaky clean "we do no wrong" image of themselves. It was a 50-50 ball and an accidental collision. If Elliott had knocked Sidebottom over and prevented him from making an easy run out, would Vettoria have offered Collingwood the wicket, I doubt it. Really I feel sorry for Sidebottom, because even if Elliott had avoided the collision, Siders would have thrown him out anyway. The umpire should not have put the decision into Collingwood's hands anyway, since when do you have to appeal for a run out if the batsman is not even a quarter of the way down the crease. If you're run out your run out. Bottom line, it was an accident, it was a legitimate run out, and if the Kiwi's didn't start bleating on and acting like poor little defenseless victims there would be no fuss. What next, if two fielders collide when going for a catch do they get awarded the catch anyway. I thought Elliot was going to cry as he exaggeratedly hobbled off the field like a wounded simpering Bambi. Hate to say it but I can't even see the Aussies acting so wimpishly, Symonds would have got up, run and if out walked off the pitch (albeit cursing under his breath). Get over it Vettori you schoolboy, you're embarrassing the All Blacks. If anyone added a sour tone to the end of the game it was the ridiculous criticism by the Kiwi's and media of Colly, when all he was doing was trying to lead England to a win.

beefy you're a clown. firstly, what has Vetorri got to do with the All Blacks?

secondly, the collision resulted in a batsman being unable to complete a run through no fault of his own. it should have been called dead ball, and would have been if Elliot had stayed down injured (read the rules if you're at all unclear on that).
But he went on with the 'spirit of the game' and and at least got up and carried on with run, as hopeless as it was.

As for comparing this with the Murali runout, I've got an apple and an orange for you to compare. clot.

Murali completed run and then wandered out of his ground as the ball was coming in. you get taught as soon as you start playing the game that the ball is not dead until it's in the 'keeper's gloves. there a big difference between taking advantage of player's lapse in concentration (or stupidity) and taking advantage of a player when one of your own has knocked him over.

and if you look at the line Sidebottom runs you'll see he's never going to be in a position to pick up the ball and run him out. he's left-handed and looks like he's trying to run around the ball and impede either the batsman or the non-striker.

stop clutching at straws. your team is an reasonable test side (just beaten a very poor NZ team. let's how SA get on) and rubbish at ODIs. stick to your 20/20 hit-and-giggle nonsense and stop dragging the rest of the game into disrepute.

Ok, we've had the final kiwi victory to wrap up the series but I've also just re-seen the run out incident from Wednesday, and so a final postscript: How can anyone say Elliott ran into Sidebottom? Because that's how an award winning reporter in The Tiimes described it. The bowler was more than half way down the pitch before the batsman made a decision to run outside him...I'm sorry it just defies belief how Collingwood upheld the appeal and it's such poetic justice that NZ have creamed England in the series, just as SA are about to do.

A collison is a collision, I have had time to think and I think that any captain would have done the same thing as Collingwood.
I know for a fact that had Vettori done the same thing, there would have been indignation if us Poms had complained. All and sundry would have been using the word whinge.

Time for honesty all around.
