You must be djoking?

Wimbledon

Can somebody tell me, is Marat Safin playing really well or Novak Djokovic playing really badly today. With Safin's 'flaky' SW19 record Novak should be wiping him off the court.

I cant believe how much importance a lot of you place on personality when it comes to a player. If they swears gets angry or make a comment that is anything other than complimentary then u guys want blood. I guess u all hate McEnroe or do u think of him fondly now? I dont like djokovic and I'm glad he is out so early. He pulls this face of disgust and sulks when he is challenged he likes it easy. U could see it at the very start of the AO semi against fed when it looked like fed had turned up. Against Nadal for the first two sets at french. that isnt what makes me hate him i just find it funny. He is arrogant and thinks too much of himself this will humble him and humiliate at the same time. Murray can relate although its too early to tell whether Safin will be the finalist.

you are only bringing up the FO facts.
what about the finals he looses. Never blames himself.

Not exactly a complete shock was it. Soon as I saw the match up, I thought it was on. Might have been out of form, but class is always likely to come out. And it did. Though it must be said he was helped by the slow courts, if they make them any slower they may as well have green clay. What is the obsession with slowing the courts? If anything, speed them up.
Second point regards seeding - how come Djokovic ends up playing Safin in the second round? I know he was a 'dangerous floater' but isn't there to stop this until the 4th round ?

I admit I haven't seen too many of Djokovic's matches (really only noticed him at last year's Aussi Open and caught most of his matches at the slams since then) but it seems to me that if he loses the first set, he unravels a bit. Against Safin in a 5 set match, I can't see why this was the case yesterday. If he'd managed to step his game up, he could have won the match. But I did watch his interview after the match and he seemed (although obviously totally gutted) pretty measured and mature about the whole thing. He seemed to suggest it was a mental thing - maybe he was just too tired from all the tennis he's been playing lately (although Nadal and Federer seem fresher than him and have been playing just as much). In any case, he's proved that he still has a lot of work to do if he wants to take over as number 1 from Roger.

Er no, because the third round is the earliest round in which seeds play each other. Replacing the position of seeds in the draw flies in the face of decades of established practice with draws, Besides, who decides what a "dangerous floater" is. It also smacks of cold feet, because someone's favourite player suffered.

Thats another thing. He cites tiredness. Yes he plays more matches than most because he always gets deeper but its only june he is absolutely done for if this is true. I think fed has played more matches than him and he is fine. obviously Nadal is fine so he doesnt count. Last year after the US open his form dipped embarrissingly. He lost to Santoro in paris Gasquet and co in the masters and yes the above are good players but he didnt even lose respectfully. I dont believe it was a mental thing its a grand slam. There are FOUR of them. fair enough if he did this at Queens or a low key event but when your seeded third for a Slam u want it.

Djoker's quote about it being a long season had me rotflmao...the season is only half way through! Not to mention the nerve he has of validity of Federer's illness ("I don't buy it"). Marat played a great match - I was pulling for him all the way - though a tad disappointed that now Fed won't have the opportunity of pulverising Djoker in the s/f. Btw, any comments from Bjorn Borg about the loss - seeing how he was so keen to relegate Federer to 3rd favourite behind Nadal and Djoker for the SW19 title?!

i agree w u, jocky..i really don't think federer is humble at all..i recall very well his yearly comments leading into roland garros, claiming to have figured nadal's game out and saying how surprised he was at having even lost to him previously calling him a one-dimensional player...and his less than gracious (to put it mildly) comments after some of his losses.

Safin's greatest challenge is self-belief. Should he progress to the semi-final and conquer Federer, Wimbledon 2008 is effectively won.
