British tennis needs a workout

Wimbledon
comment on the article

Maybe it's just me but having watched a number of the British women's "rising stars" over the last few days, I have found it striking how out of shape they appear to be.

Tennis is played at such a high standard these days that surely you need to be in oustanding phyiscal condition to even hope to compete. Watching the likes of Cavaday, South, etc they barely resemble what I would consider to be fit let alone a professional sports person/athlete.

Don't get me wrong, (before you condemn me), this is not a weight issue but more about muscular quality and physical shape. This is not about being skinny, look at Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport as examples of amazing tennis players. But these woman were incredibly powerful, our players are not and I can't help but feel that this is a visable sign of lack of commitment to the sport.

Thoughts?

Iss a shame there's all this jealousy on ere from some English tennis fans towards Andy n I'm English a Londoner meself. Iss not personality wot wins games but ability n Andy's got it n thass all there is to it. We should all get behind Andy whether we're Scots, English Welsh or NI as e represents Gt Britain as does Chris Eaton n all.

Iss disappointin seein Elena lose today, she should've put up more of a fight n at least for the 2nd set n cut ahrt the unforced errors. Anne's really got to go for tomorrah against Venus nt she. If Anne don't win, I ope Venus or Serena win Wimbledon, there the greatest.

I'm sure it's already been said a million times but the "Tiger Tim" crowd won't take to Murray as much because he is Scottish. Unfair or not it's not difficult to figure out. Just as well really because I doubt you have a future Wimbledon champion in him either.

why do so many people care about tennis anyway? Haven't Rugby Union fans got anything better to do with their time than cheer on "Andy" like he is some sort of British messiah. Murray doesn't care about posh, strawberry chomping, tea guzzling English folk from Hertfordshire or wherever. He's a typical anti-english scot with a chip on his shoulder. A surly, dour one at that.

I dunno, I find it difficult to like Murray because of his Scottishness. Now before I get accused of being a racist or whatever, he is supposed to be representing GREAT BRITAIN. When Henman/Rusedski were around, they were always British, not English, and the same should stand true for Murray.
If he cleaned up his act and acted British instead of Scottish, I may be able to find some way of supporting him, but until then I cannot.
It is not really any surprise the atmosphere is flat, he is not really the kind of character to provoke celebration is he. I'm not saying Henman was exactly a crowd pleaser, but theres something about Murray that just makes him seem "not as cool" as Henman.

Also I do not think he will ever win Wimbledon, there are Djokovic and Nadal, both guys his age, and they have already achieved more than Andy ever will. He will probably just become another Henman at best.

I may be wrong, but... I think the Henman/Murry situation is a lot simpler! And i dont think it has anything to do nationality.

Tim Played his game with great passion and he showed it to the crowd - thats why they went wild!

Andy plays his game with great passion and doesnt show it to the crowd - thats why the crowd isnt as wild!

Its the same reason i cheer on Nadal, i am not Spanish, but in Nadal you have a player who really connects with the crowd... and as a punter thats what i want to cheer!

Lets hope the rain stays away and we see some great Tennis this year!

I think Andy as more raw talent than Tim n e'll do well n deserves all the support. Iss not the personality of a player wot wins games but their ability. Who cares wot part of the UK e comes from, e represents Britain n thass all there is to it so the separatist types on ere can sling their ook.

"Tim Played his game with great passion and he showed it to the crowd - thats why they went wild!"

Absolute rubbish. Passion? That fist pump is passion? Much as I like Henman he isn't anywhere near as passionate as Murray.

The crowd went wild becasue it was inevitably a tight affair with Henman scraping through.

Murray has destroyed his first two opponents and the UK tennis fan can't deal with it, they need the drama to get excited it seems.
