I've achieved my Olympic dream

Alan Wills

Alan Wills is Great Britain’s leading male archer and over the coming months on 606, he will be providing an insight into his preparations for the Olympic Games.

I qualified for the GB Olympic team last week and it was a great feeling – it's taken me about eight years to get this stage, so I'm really chuffed to have achieved my dream.

It's not really sunk in yet though as the shoot-off finished on Thursday and while I was on my way home, I found out that my mum had had a heart attack.

Thankfully she's OK, but I only had Thursday night at home before heading off for the next World Cup meet in Boe, France.

I'm feeling a bit exhausted after the shoot-off as mentally it was very tough and the conditions were really difficult.

On the first day it was raining and really windy and on the second day, the wind was even worse, but I knew I was going to make it.

My confidence stemmed from the European Championships where I regained my form (as I told you last time) and it was then that I knew I would qualify.

I only just scraped through from the first shoot-off and I genuinely thought I wasn't going to make the team
After the Euros, I had a brief spell in Germany with Larry Godfrey and Simon Terry where we got our bows fine-tuned. It makes a huge difference to know that you're equipment is working as it should be as it gives you one less thing to have to worry about.

And it definitely proved the right decision to go to Germnay rather than to the World Cup event in Turkey.

If you remember, there were three shoot-off stages to come through to be named in the GB team for Beijing, and the second one was at the beginning of June after I got back from Germany.

And I came back ready for it, starting the competition really well and although I had a couple of poor arrows, I was happy with my score.

I was trying to have a bit of a laugh with the other archers to make it as relaxed as possible as I knew I was under pressure.

I only just scraped through from the first shoot-off and I genuinely thought at that time that I wasn't going to make the team.

But I finished third overall in the second shoot-off, guaranteeing me a place at last week's decider, which saw four of us competing for three places.

I again started really well and was leading at one point. I was just trying to focus on my own score, though, and let everyone else do their own thing.

Tom Barber is just 16 – he will be coming to the pre-Olympic holding camp in Macau with us as reserve and it will be a great experience for him
Although there were three spots up for grabs, only the top two were guaranteed an Olympic place with the third spot being chosen by coach Peter Suk.

Simon and Larry occupied one and two and I finished third and had to wait a short while because Peter could have chosen to take Tom Barber, who was the fourth competitor, over me.

There was a little doubt in my mind that he might pick Tom as, even though he is only 16, he is a fantastic archer.

But in the long run, I think he made the right decision. Tom is young and up-and-coming – he will be coming to the pre-Olympic holding camp in Macau with us as reserve and it will be a great experience for him for 2012.

With the shoot-off out of the way, there's no real time for me to rest as we have a World Cup meeting in France.

The good news is that the Dream Team of Simon, Larry and I will be competing together for the first time this year.

I'm not going to France with any expectations though – I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing and so long as I'm happy with my shooting at the end of each day, then that's fine.

When we get back, I'm going off for a week's break and that is when the fact that I am going to the Olympics will hit me.

I've got one final training camp in mid-July at Lilleshall and while I'm there I'll let you know more about my warm-up for the Olympics and my schedule out in Beijing.

Until then, if you have any questions, please fire away.
