British MotoGP - race day at Donington

Moto GP
comment on the article

Greetings from a blustery but sunny Donington, as the countdown to the British MotoGP continues. We've already had pouring rain this morning, and the sky still looks pretty dark, so no-one knows quite what conditions to expect for racing later on.

Today's running order is the 125s at 12 noon, the 250s at 1.15pm and the MotoGP at 3pm, and here is the link to our live coverage - news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/mot...

There are three British riders to look out for in the 125s, most notably 15-year-old Scott Redding who continues his remarkable debut season by qualifying in fourth place.

Eugene Laverty carries home hopes in the 250s, and then there is the big one - the MotoGP.

Casey Stoner, Valentino Rossi and Chris Vermeulen occupy the front spots, but many eyes will be on Britain's James Toseland.

Unfortunately those eyes will have to look back to 16th place on the grid to find him after a miserable performance in qualifying.

So which race has really caught your eye? Where are you following the race? Do you think Toseland can salvage something, or are you fed up hearing his name mentioned all the time? Do you think the weather is going to play a big factor?

Your thoughts, opinions and comments please...

there can be no doubt that Casey Stoner is a talented guy, he must be to be able to run at such a fast pace from the begining of the weekend to the end, if he and ducati have got back to the form of last year then the title will come down to the wire if casey was to win the next 9 races with vale 2nd then they would go into the last race on the same points which would make for interesting racing but i reckon jorge will put the cat amongst the pigeons when he regains full fitness, well done to scott redding though he showed a great maturity on them young shoulders and he would have won that even if the italian whose name has left my head didnt fall off,
unluck for JT though i agree he tried too hard after his dismall qualifying but hey thats racing and im sure he will bounce back from that, he has gone well in Assen before with a race win and a second last year ( by the smallest of margins) cant wait for assen its an exciting track

No mention of the wonderful World class achievement by Scott Redding on Radio 5 Live sport this morning. They seemed more concerned by Paul Ince's lack of an international coaching badge, not a pre-requisite that need worry the majority of English Club Managers. Since the great Barry Sheene, we've only had Alan Carter (250cc French GP 1983, Jeremy McWilliams ( 2001) and Niall Mackenzies string of podium finishes to cheer about in MotoGP.

i am indeed matey....perhaps you ought to look up "wind up" in the dictionary......seriously though, he is a boring whinger...slags off Brits in the press all the time then expects to get a heroes welcome...the boy has a huge chip on his shoulder. Manufacturers are in moto gp to promote their bikes, try asking the average race fan who they support and 99.9% will say anyone but stoner...doesnt exactly do Ducati much good does it....remember how we all loved the marque when Capirex was on board and winning !!

I disagree, I would say WSB has far more influence when it comes to road sales than Motogp where Ducati are concerned, for reasons im sure you are aware of. That aside, despite the obvious dislike you and others have for him, to suggest that any World Champion will have a negative effect on road sales because of something you imagined he said, is ludicrous.

One thing I have noticed, all these insults directed at Casey, are all based around his personality, never his talent. So as long as he does his job, puts up a fight and wins occaisionally, Ducati, Casey himself and his fans are very very happy indeed.

Are you Italian by any chance? you like Rossi, Ducati and Capirossi.... hmm.

Its unfair to compare riders, Capirossi is v.good, and no disrespect to him, but history shows that Casey is better, and kicked his butt on the same machinery...

I was there. Quite honestly - Best day of my life. I was within touching distance from Rossi, and I touched his knee slider when thrown out to the audience. I had a firm grip on it till some giant oaf elbowed me in the face and took it off me. The Rossi chants at the end were unbelievable, kinda made me feel sorry for Stoner, but the grin on Rossi's face was priceless. I was up against the fence and the man himself (Rossi) made eye contact with me and smiled. I nearly fainted.
Fantastic day out. Made eye contact with Rossi, touched his knee slider, races were awesome and I ran up and down Donington Part Track and stood on the grid where Rossi started. Wow.

Was there all weekend at Donington, and I had a thoroughly brilliant time. Well done Scott Redding - everyone was going crazy for him every lap he came past, and when he took the lead it was just amazing. I think everyone had all their fingers and toes crossed till he crossed the finish line - and grabbing a Union Jack and doing a burnout right in front of where I was stood was great!

A dominant display by Stoner - clearly faster than everybody else on track by a country mile, and didn't put a foot wrong all weekend. Those few idiots booing him or giving him the thumbs down wreck an otherwise great and friendly atmosphere - where I was standing, everybody clapped and cheered him when he came round for the parade lap, and up on the podium too, but I can't believe some people were childish enough to show him anything but respect. Come on folks, even if you don't particularly like the guy (and I'd be in your camp) give him a round of applause for a great race.

Overtake of the day - Rossi on Pedrosa at the old hairpin. Watching that sort of thing on the telly is great, but in the flesh it's just mindblowing! As a Rossi fan I was going nuts, the yellow flags were flying and the air horns were going off. It's that sort of atmosphere that we should be celebrating at Donington, and the fact that everyone was cheering on Toseland every lap he came by too. Gutted for him, but what a trooper - getting back on the bike and doggedly dragging it round till the chequered flag shows the sort of spirit people love him for. Racing is racing, sometimes these things happen. Better luck next year!

Too many Sun reading football fans at Donnnnnington, if you ask me.
Talking of newspapers (?) and the media, well apart from the odd mention for #45, they can hang their heads in shame, especially the Midlands tv stations. It's a bloody disgrace. BBC Midlands Today couldn't even be bothered to mention the GP at all tonight, we had ruddy rowing instead. Absolutely pathetic, I nearly kicked my telly in!!!! steam

Absolutely ridiculous - I know that it's not the most popular sport in this country (for the life of me I honestly can't see why not though!) but the guy broke a record - youngest ever GP winner and all that, I mean how they can fail to report on that is beyond me. Grrrrrr.

More crackpot idea's here I hate to say it but James Toseland will never be moto gp world champ he will belong to that group that nearly gets there but never quite makes it now seems a good bet that the next brit world champ will be probably be 1 of the 3 youngsters that are in the 125s at present hopefully they will follow the europeon route of 125, 250/600 ? moto gp and in say 6 years time we might have 3 brits in the top class.
just 2 further points a bit of fun really why not have a end of season meet between top ten motogp finishers and the superbike finishers one race on motogp bikes and one on the supers if some promoter does this it would be a sell out + can i have free tickets as it was my idea.
finally mr j palmer please invite the top 6 riders from the Ama jap supers and the bsb and hold a race series over the easter bank hols at 3 circuits just showing my age there
