BURROW AND MCGUIRE SIGN NEW CONTRACTS

Leeds
comment on the article

Great Britain half-backs Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire have signed new five-year contracts that will keep them with engage Super League champions Leeds until the end of the 2013 season.

The news is a timely boost for the Rhinos as they prepare to face arch rivals St Helens at Headingley tomorrow looking to bounce back from last week's surprise defeat at Harlequins.

The new deals will take both 25-year-old players through to their 30th birthdays and ensure they finish their careers with their home-town club. Their current contracts were due to expire at the end of next season.

"This is fantastic news for the Rhinos and our future," said Leeds coach Brian McClennan.

"Rob and Danny are world-class players and for them to commit their career to the club speaks volumes for them as individuals but also about Leeds as a club.

"The club have worked hard to create an environment that people do not want to leave and that is a great message to give our young people.

"Both players have shown loyalty and commitment to the club and to spend your entire career at one club is something that should be admired in the modern era."

Burrow, who is certain to be scrum-half for England in next week's Gillette international against France, said: "This is the best club in the world and I don't want to be anywhere else.

"It is great playing and training alongside lads I grew up with and that was certainly a factor when deciding on the new deal."

McGuire, who made his debut a year after Burrow in 2002, said: "I am really pleased to have got my future sorted out. I think this group of players is going to be successful in the years ahead and I want to be part of that.

"I am 25 now and as a player your best years are probably between 25 and 30 and I am happy to be playing those years of my career here at the Rhinos."

C'mon how come no one has mentioned the salary cap yet I'm getting worried as someone has to usually mention it at least once every time someone signs a new deal winkeye

Ok, so Long is a great half-back, but he's hardly a credit to the game when it comes to the international set-up. Burrow went on tour and never even got on the bench, even when Long spat his dummy out and went home. Yet the little feller, far from going into a sulk, stuck with it and even trained with a smile on his face by all accounts. A true professional in every sense of the word and someone I hope will run rings round the Aussies in the tri-nations.
