Women´s Wimby Thread -- Penta(5) for Venus!

comment on the article

After having received overwhelmingly positive evaluations for my thread dedicated to the FO fortnight(Women´s FO Thread -- Updates & Upsets), I decided to continue this discussion forum during the Wimbledon fortnight.

As I said before, I welcome all fans of the women´s game to join me here, to express thoughts, views, to provide analysis, interesting stories, and relevant themes for discussions and debates. At the same time, off-topic posts and posts solely tended to insult the feelings of others will be removed.

I will do my best to provide updates on daily basis, like I did for the FO thread. And I sincerely hope this will help to generate more interests for the ladies´game. So enjoy the competition!

THE DRAW:

The Main contenders were split into two halves, with Sharapova, Venus and Jankovic in the Bottom half, and Ivanovic and Serena in the top half!!!

Anticipated Quarters match-ups:

Ivanovic(1)OUT - Chakvetadze(8)OUT
Kuznetsova(4)OUT - Serena W.(6)Finalist

Dementieva(5)OUT - Sharapova(3)-OUT
Venus W.(7)winner - Jankovic(2)OUT

Result of the Poll for 2008 WINNER:

1, Sharapova(out) 4/12votes = 33%
2, Ivanovic(out) 3/12 = 25%. Venus W. 3/12 = 25%
4, Serena W. 1/12 = 8.5%. Jankovic(out) 1/12 = 8.5%

So congratulations to Maria on winning the poll for 2008 Wimbledon Champion!

Updates:

The latest: Venus and Serena also won the doubles final, defeating Raymond and Stosur. It is truly a wonderful day for USA and the Williams sisters, one day after the "independence Day"(July 4)!

The best player of Wimbledon 2008, Venus Williams, has just won her 5th Wimby crown in her 7th final in the last 9 years! So Venus is the most successful wimbledon champion since Graf(7).

Venus defeated her sister Serena in two very competitive sets 7-5, 6-4. This was the first time she beat Serena at Wimbledon finals, losing to her in both 2002 and 2003 finals.

This win also confirmed the American dominance of the event in the last 10 years:

99 Davenport
00 Venus
01 Venus
02 Serena
03 Serena
05 Venus
07 Venus
08 Venus

Only in 2004 and 2006, it was won by non-Americans(Sharapova and Mauresmo). Also in those ten years, six of the losing finalists were Americans. And for the new power Russians, Sharapova was the only one in the last ten year to have once reached the final.

Despite her fantastic run, Venus will remain the 7th ranked player after tomorrow. The rankings will not change much:

1,Ivanovic(3828)
2,Jankovic(3685)
3,Sharapova(3626)
4,Kuznetsova(3455)
5,Dementieva(3165)
6,Serena W.(3126)
7,Venus W.(2606)

But after all, who would have thought that Venus could triumph again this year, considering her form before the event. I still kept the anticipated quarterfinal match-ups and the poll results above, just to show how unpredictable women´s tennis is these days.

My congratulations to Venus! And thank you all for participating in this forum. Until the Olympics, I guess. So long!

who cares if it's competitive or not. There's absolutely nothing to discern between the two opponents. I honestly couldn't care who wins, I don't even dislike the williams sisters, I just don't care.

I guess it is just hard for a fan to root for one of them against the other, unlike lets say one of them against sharapova. It a bit like two line-ups of the same football team playing each other.

How can you say there's nothing to dsicern between these two sisters?
doh
Venus is introverted, Serena is an extrovert, Venus is religious, Serena is not, Venus never quarrels with the umpire or swears on the court, Serena has done both, Venus is cautious with the press, Serena speaks her mind....

Only those who dislike the Williams sisters for interesting reasons say there's nothing to choose between them.

Venus two poitns from the match. Come on, Venus!

It really looked like Serena was going to be the dominant factor in this final - her superior forehand power was really telling in the first 5 - 6 games. She was striking the forehand regularly at speeds of 85 - 90 mph, and getting terrific work on the ball, so that even Venus couldn't get a decent play on it. Serena was also holding serve far more comfortably than Venus, who had to keep fending off break-point after break-point on her serve. However, after breaking back, Venus won just about al the critical points to in the first set... and as the match lengthened Venus' superior court coverage and (even more critically) power on the full stretch was the decisive factor in the match. Venus was also more dynamic from the mid-court, on both drive- and conventional volleys. A very good effort from Serena, though - she just squandered her main chances early on in this match. Watching this match, though, you can see quite clearly why Venus has been sooooooo dominant at this tournament. The serve (just pure, flat, power - serving up to 129 mph today), athleticism and power on shots from all parts of the court give her an almost unassailable edge against other players, as long as she keeps her unforced error count down. A very impressive performance.

Congrats to Venus!!!

The nicer and more gracious person won the match, thankfully. Venus was just better than Serena - not by much but it was enough!!!

Very early in this thread I tipped Venus to win an all Williams sister final and despite getting routes to the final wrong I have been proven right in the end. On grass, in their best form the Williams sisters are pretty much unbeatable and the other players are going to have to raise their game substantially to catch Venus and Serena up.

Congratulations to Serena and Venus for winning the doubles as well bubbly -- truly an amasing achievement.

Now the first 3 Slams of 2008 have been won by three players: Sharapova, Ivanovic and Venus. I am sure the USO will be the most highly contested in the year, with all those three and Serena, Kuznetsova, Jankovic... all good on HC, unlike on clay and grass which favor only some of them.

I think the sisters will do well at their home GS. Sharapova and Kuzzy have won before. Ivanovic is no-1. So I don´t expect such early exit of the top seed like they did at wimby 2008.

A great perfromance by Venus....
smiley
She really enjoys the grass! Somehow, I don't think she'll do as well at the US Open. However, I think that the American GS might be Serena's for the taking.
