abitofsevemagic - you deserved to get flamed for your previous post, especially now as you've since shown to be capable of reasonable discussion. The previous post is a bunch of baloney. Tiger is the best thing that's ever happened to golf and if he retired tomorrow you're going to hear the name mentioned for the rest of your life.

Tiger has been a tremendous shot in the arm (if not the entire body) for the game of golf. He's the consummate professional and shows immense respect for his competitors and for each event he enters. Why do I state this? Have you ever seen him give less than 100%, regardless of his position in any event? He shot an 85 at Carnoustie a few years ago and comes back with a 65 the next day. He gets paid millions (remember it's the sponsor's who willingly put up the money) to play in Germany at the SAP and he doesn't just fly in to collect a check ... he grinds out win after win.

There are some who think he's bigger than the game. IMO, we ALL are bigger than the game. If we don't play the game, there is no game.

One day Tiger will be gone, and there will be other dominant golfers. Until then, let's enjoy him as he raises the bar for those who follow to jump over.

It's very difficult to compare sportsmen from different era's who play the same sport let alone those who play different sports.
Tiger is a great player nobody could argue with that.
But Jack Nicklaus as always been a favourite of mine.
Not just a great player but also a great sportsman win of lose.
And something for you to think about.
If Tiger hadn't been around for the last 10 years, name me another big Major winner?
Even if he ends up beating Jack Nicklaus's Major record which he may well do,
he didn't have the likes of Arnold Palmer Gary Player Tom Watson and Lee Trevino to put up with did he.

You sound educated and intelligent in your delivery yet the content of your arguments are moronic. That I find baffling. Whether you like it or not TW conducts himself exceptionally on and off the course. Better than the majority of his peers.

His reserved approach to the media comes from his early years on tour where he made an off colour joke off the record which a magazine journalist at the time used to produce big headlines and TW was thouroughly attacked for those comments. To which he issued an apology. Ever since he has treated the media with the sceptisism it often deserves.

Countless numbers of ppl close to tiger say that once you get to know him he is a very funny and generous human being and I am sure you have heard this. But comments like that youc choose to ignore and nit pick at the little imperfections of an otherwise magnificent athlete.

You talk about fists pumps I remeber garcia, harrington, vijay practially every golfer I know has fist pumped a good putt in the final round. Yes he has more fist pumps but only because he makes a LOT MORE PUTTS.

The problem you have is you are stuck in a past that you have to keep manufacturing points to defend. And the more astounding TW's accheivements get the more you twist the fact to try and sound objective when its quite obvious you are not. Here is the bottom line TW is on the way to achieving more than any other golfer ever has. AND YOU DONT LIKE IT. Thats the bottom lin. Your reasons for this I am not even going to begin to speculate but as long as you live in this fantasy world where you dont acknowledge the man's prowess. Everyone will keep looking at you like a bitter old dinosaur with serious issues.

You are absolutely right about that but the couter argument to that is Jack Niclaus did not live in an era where ppl ranked 100th in the world weere capable of winnign majors. That just did not happen. In jacks day only a haful of players. Most of which you mentioned earlier were capable of winning a major. Now the list of players is endess.

Also The standard of play in those days was as high as it is now (Before you jump on your hight horse and argue abotu this think about it, human beings get better at each and every sport the longer we have been playing it. Statistics bear that fact out). There are more ppl BY FAR around the world playing golf now than there had ever been. So in an environment wheree the copetitors are more num, erous than they have ever been and different coutries are producing athletes whose only goal in life since they were bron was to be golf stars. Are you telling me that they arent as good as those from 30 years ago who were limited to a field of mostly white privileged players and a few talented white caddies??? Sorry that doesnt make sense.

While I will accept knowing how to win is a great advantage I will not accpet that the obstacles Jack faced in a few great players of his time was more formidable than a TW that has to fight of players from all corners of the globe better trained than they ever have, physically and psychologically.

Back to Woods' injury - I had the same ACL reconstructive surgery as Tiger had 5 months ago and I played my first round of golf last week - 5 months since the operation, and my knee was absolutely fine. It didn't affect my game at all. I know Tiger is (just a little bit!) in a completely different universe to me on the golf course but the point is he will be back just as good as he was before the injury.

I think he will come back better, any bad habits in his swing will have gone and he can make his swing technically perfect (although he is immense his swing does have faults hence his tendency to loose drives right sometimes)

this will be an even bigger improvement than from 2001 changes. I also think a break from the game will make him even hungrier and mean that he will play long after eclipsing jacks records

What Tiger has been is on the record, what he will be is conjecture and depends on his desire and his health. If both are intact and he makes a full recovery he will be better than he was before if not he will still go down as the best golfer that ever was.

i've had acl surgery and as with the poster above, i'm obviously nowhere near pro level, but my handicap has gone from 17 to 10 since and i have no problems with my swing. he's being eminently sensible, playing everything down and sandbagging on expecations of himself and fair play to that. he'll be back, strong as ever but in his own time.
