New stadium

comment on the article

Portsmouth are set to leave Fratton Park and move to a new 36,000-capacity stadium overlooking Portsmouth harbour.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foo...

If the FA Cup holders receive the necessary planning, consent work will start on the new ground next year.

What do you make of the news? Is a move long overdue, or will you be sad to see Fratton Park turned into flats?

And what will be the impact on the pitch - will a shiny new stadium and the revenue generated help attract players to the club, or might the team follow Arsenal, Manchester City and many more in taking time to adapt to their new settings?

don't believe anything you see until that first brick is layed...that's what i've learnt as a pompey fan for the last few years as well as many others too! really hope this does happen though FINALLY this time...but weren't there rumours that it'd b over 40,000 for world cup 2018 (which apparantly is a 2 horse race between us and the ruskies?)

Could be called "The Paulsgrove Tip Arena" after the landfill site on its doorstep.

Leicester fan here giving you advance warning to kiss goodbye to 20-odd guaranteed home points per season if and when the ground is up and running. Just be careful how much debt you take on......all the best

Portsmouth’s ground will be great but to the person who compared it to Fulham’s well you need to take a look at all the grounds, which have disappeared over the years, replaced by modern soulless structures. There is nothing wrong with a throw back to the old fashioned type.

It looks fantastic, surely to god the council can get this one off the ground, its not too near any housing or geese or field mice!!!

Its what the club will have to have if they want to continuely do well.

And its bigger than the skip up the road. PUP.

dont believe any of it until they actually start building the stadium.

they have been talking about a new ground at least 15 years, and none of the plans have come to fruition.

needless to say i am very sceptical, but i must admit it does look like an attractive stadium, a much better design than those awful stadiums like the riverside etc.

ANything has to be better than Fratton Park (exuberant atmosphere notwithstanding). I don't understand why the management aren't looking to build it larger than 40,000 capacity though given what that opens up in terms of European and International (they can't let St Mary's be the only WC - assuming England gets it - option on the South Coast can they?)possibilities and the impact that would have on tourism etc.

One thing I don't get. Is this the Horsea Island site where the old NAvy Firefighting and Diver Tarining SChool was and where I did my BSAC open water training?

Any truth in the rumour that a gallery called 'artist impressions of the last 30 years' is about to open in the City ?

DERedcoat, it looks like it must be close to the Port Solent cinema/entertainment complex. And I agree on the 40k thing. St Mary's can be expanded to 40k, and no doubt will for 2018 if England get it.

One thing that worries me - Junction 12 of the M27 is an absolute mess as it is. How much more confusing and/or congested can it get, especially as the new site isn't really walking distance from a railway station as Fratton Park is?
