End of an era?

Euro 2008 France

Well that's it from France for some time. Just like England's rugby team...too many key players getting too old at the same time. They were very disappointing and looked fairly clueless. There are some bright sparks (Benzema looks excellent and I reckon Govou could be moulded into a decent player) but the bulk of that side would have struggled no matter which group they were drawn in.

By keepin Dommy the French FA have affirmed their status as the jokes of the footballing world. World & European Champions & now they have to hold on the manager who in reality has done nothing to improve Frances image.

Domenech got France to a World Cup final in 2006. No-one expected that before the tournament, and if you did then you are kidding yourself and everyone. The only time France did that before was in 1998, when they were the hosts. I'm sure people will say 'but yeah, they had the players (Zidane etc)'. Well, did Argentina not have the players? Have the Dutch not had great players in the last 15 years? How many World Cup finals have they reached recently?

The criticism of Domenech is the usual stuff that comes out when a nation want a scapegoat for failure. If Spain had sacked Aragones when they lost 3-2 to Northern Ireland, would they have won the European Championships? This stuff with Domenech and star signs: sorry, I don't buy it. That's media nonsense designed to make the man look like a laughing stock.

The French are in a 'transitional' period as far as their squad goes and if Domenech was guilty of anything, it was being too loyal to some ageing players like Thuram. With some quality young players emerging I think the future is bright for them and I still think Domenech is the right coach. They just had a bad tournament.

French squad was too dependant on Henry and Ribery - was it just Henry who scored a goal for France in Euro 2008? - especially after Ribery's injury, France seemed to be totally lost. OK, let's say that French players weren't at an excellent condition but still, they are one of the best players in the world. Therefore, I deduce that it is Domenech who can't use these expensive players properly. Mr Domenech always said that Trezeguet-Henry line was problematic but I think that eliminating Trezeguet from the list was a mistake. Also, there was a mismatch. The players were mostly either too old or too young, which aroused further problems.

He doesn't deserve to keep the job. He made serious mistakes with his team at the Euros, and the fact that he ignored Trezeguet at all was silly. Poor decision by the FFF.

I think this is the start of a barren period for Frecnh football. Somebody such as Deschemps would come an open mind towards players. Domenech couldnt let go of players such as Thuram who have been on the side since the last world cup. Add to this the fact that he was willing to pick someone such as Gomis, after one good season in the French league, over Trezugeut who has consistantly proved himself in Italy and had possibly his best ever season.
A new manager might be more ruthless and remove players such as Sagnol and Coupet to be replaced by younger players such as Frey and Sagna.

Domenech looked like his team, clueless, throughout the entire competition, I dont expect this to change any time soon.

Isn't that somewhat contradictory? To dislike Domenech because he 'doesn't have an open mind towards players' and then criticise him for calling up Gomis, who had done well in the French league?

"Evra not included". Not included in what? He did play the last two games. OK he should have played the first one too, but he WAS included.
