Alonso unsure on Renault future

Formula One

comment on the article

Double world champion Fernando Alonso says he has not yet decided whether to stay with Renault next year.

The team have been uncompetitive this season and the Spaniard is believed to have a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave for 2009.

"I do not know what can happen. At the end of the year I will see where Renault is and decide," he said.

"The car has improved and I hope that by the end of the year there will be podiums and victories."

Alonso, who has been widely linked with a move to Ferrari in 2009 or 2010, admitted he was expecting more from his return to the team with which he won the world title in 2005 and 2006.

NANDOWOLF - maybe Alonso still has fans, but I bet there are alot more Mclaren fans who disgusted with his attitude, lack of loyality and the way he behaved last year, which is ashame as he will always be remembered for this and not the fact he was a good driver.

But he has himself to blame for that and no-one else!

I used to really love F1, saw the greats battle it out Mansell / Senna / Prost / Piquet time and time again but the F1 drivers now are just a bunch of spoilt brats. moan moan moan, overtake in the pits, win by pitstop. Its a farce, its all about the big manufacturers and advertising. no longer can F1 be classified as a sport when there is no sporting behaviour on show. Its enterainement and sponsorship advertising. As for Alonso, the man might be a former world champion, but class, he hasnt got an ounce of it.

In '94 and '95 one Michael Schumacher beat our Damon Hill to the crown in a Benneton (which later became Renault) and I remember resenting him deeply for it! Even though it took him 5 years to win another championship, it took him another 5 years to stop.

It took a young Alonso to end his reign, not in a Ferrari, not in a Maclaren but in a Renault.

Make no mistake, Fernando Alonso is a supreme racing driver. The man who beat a 7 times Formula one world champion. Twice.

So, whilst we might take a dim view towards his behaviour in 2007, we'll all appreciate his contribution to the sport when he races his last race. Just like Schumacher before him.

"The man who beat a 7 times Formula one world champion. Twice."

Why do some people insist on including Schumacher as a credible challenger in the 2005 season? The Ferrari/Bridgestone package was so dire it needed Indygate for a win.

Therefore, Alonso beat Schumacher in 2006 but it is (as I have argued so many times before) wholly impertinent to state the same for 2005. Otherwise we could argue that Schumacher defeated Alonso in 2001, 2003 & 2004 even though there was little direct competition. We could stretch the argument even further to include 2002, when Alonso was defeated by Schumacher while test driver for Renault...

@pataliebre
"He took a team that couldn't win a single race in 2006 and was able to develop the car to make it competitive again."

Are you really so naive to think that a driver can make that much difference to the development of a car over the closed season?

Alonso's disgraceful behavior at Mclaren?
Lets just remember who sparked off a FIA inquiry in regards to saying he could have won Monaco in 2007 only for team orders, that is the actions of a snake. That was something I found reprehensible and downright insulting towards Alonso. And what about Hamilton at Hungary 2007 whinging about being blocked in the pits which resulted in Alonso being penalised.I am of the opinion that Hamilton is quite political when it comes to how he operates within a team just from those actions alone, I have lost all time for the chap. I don't think Alonso is "obsessed" with Hamilton as Massive_Messon proclaims. It was Hamilton who claimed he was friendly with Alonso and that they regularly talk during winter testing.Such PR Crap!
I am not an Alonso fan but when you read such crap from this massive ******, oh sorry, massive_messon I feel obliged to write in.To see Alonso wringing the neck of the Renault is one of the highlights of the season.Double World champions demonstrate on the track and that in my mind why he would be top of the shopping list of all the top teams except for Mclaren. They demonstrated a huge disrespect to him and his previous achievements last year and if they fully backed him I feel that they would have been world champions, as a customer team of course, winning in a Mclaren Ferrari!

Regadless of who is to blame for Alonso's situation last year the fact is that there is no way he will ever race for McLaren again.

He is also highly unlikley to race for Ferrari while Raikkonen is there, firstly because Ferrari like a clear 1-2 driver relationship (no matter how well he is doing, Massa will always be default #2 at the start of the seasn to Raikkonen) and second because dropping Massa would possibly annoy Schumacher into leaving and he does great business for them still.

The other option is BMW, the chance to compete alongside Kubica next year is a real possibility as long as Alonso isnt asking for silly money (and he shouldnt be if he wants a better car).

Whata stupid statement. Senna and Prost were two of the most obnoxious people you could ever meet, they could never take losing and would both indulge in questionable tactics without hesitation if it proved to be to their benefit. They are worse than Alonso, Hamilton and everyone else who has come since with the possible exception of Schumacher and Irvine in that regards.

But I don't care, I watch for the race, not the column inch generating interviews.
