F1 boss issues breakaway threat

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has warned that unease over the position of Max Mosley could lead to the teams forming a breakaway championship.

Ecclestone had previously played down the threat after Mosley won a vote of confidence as president of governing body the FIA over a sex scandal.

The 77-year-old told the Times: "The teams can do what they like.

"To keep sponsors happy, we are trying to say we can't break away. But it could well be that it will happen."

Ecclestone pointed out that the failure of F1's power-brokers to renew the Concorde Agreement, the document which governed the sport from 1981 to 2007, means the team are free agents.

Why are we so bothered about how he enjoys his sex life. It's his life so let him enjoy it regardless of his position. When he participated in his sexual act it was private - how was he to know that someone would sell the story. We live in a life where it is so easy to criticise others. As it has been said (in the bible) 'let he without sin cast the first stone'.

My issue with Max has nothing to do with his private life - in fact I have defended his right to privacy many times. My issue with Max is how he has goverened F1 and I think he has performed badly, especially in recent years.

The only major change to F1 in recent years is the take over of the teams by major motor manufacturers - this is principal component killing F1; and I personally bet my own money on Merc Benz and BMW being behind the plot to bring down Mosley. I prefer the set-up/balance of power the way it is!!

I notice the photo that accompanies this article.
Mosley in default mode, finger-wagging admonisher of all before him, like he passes gold nuggets when he is actually worse than the rest.
Get shot of him. He is a dismal failure.
At least Ecclestone has woken up.

GP1 ?>>

Haven't looked through all your links jolly but 'GP1' was Bernie's slip of the tongue in Soho, reported by the Sun last year if you remember. Could still do something with his 'GP3' trademark in a deal with Teixeira perhaps.

auto, later pitpass revealed that GP1 term had already been copyrighted ( or whatever u may call it) by one of Bernies company ( not by formula1 though) . Pitpass at that time had speculated that it might have been a measure adopted by bernie in case he was ousted by the CVC from from FOM's management...

But do u think a break away is possible... When does the 100 year contract come into effect???

Sorry Parag, I'm on here less and less these days. If you mean an f1 teams break away, no, extremely unlikely at best. If you mean a GP3 series, less unlikely, but that was more about me amusing myself with the prospect of an A1GP/GP2 joint calender (which could a 12 month season, ho! ho!) but all sorts of difficulties there of course.
Here's an informative article on the 100 year agreement from Atlas for your perusal: http://atlasf1.autosport.com/2000/ger/preview/okeefe.html

This whole thing is just an ugly, monstrous struggle for the life and breadth of F1. More damaging, is that it is by two men of questionable principle.

Bernie says one thing today and the exact opposit tomorrow; its getting worse than the tower of Babel and a stack exposure of the rot in the bellie of F1 administration.

Both men are on a strange self destruct journey. F1 can only benefit.

"Both men are on a strange self destruct journey. F1 can only benefit."

I wish I could agree but, as the two principal figures in F1, their bickering will do more harm than good, at least in the short term. Whether F1 recovers will be down to who gets chosen to replace Max. If the person is one of Max's shadows then I really fear for the future of F1.
