Right, you've got a month to get organised!

Scottish League
comment on the article

This seems a bit incredible. On 3 July all 29 clubs in the league will vote on which team should be allowed into the Scottish Football League.

Spartans, Annan Athletic, Edinburgh City, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers are the contenders.

What's astonishing is the timescale for the successful applicant to arrange playing in a new league. Just four weeks!

I don't suppose there are many, but what about season ticket sales and hospitality packages, matchday advertising and programme printing?

What a nightmare to organise all these in just a month before the season kicks off.

The knock-on effect for, say, the East of Scotland League is similar. Does anyone know if they have other teams waiting in the wings to step up should this league lose a member?

Initially I was keen on Spartans but after reading further into the teams applying I think Preston Ahtletic would be my favoured choice. The fact they are looking to become "East Lothian FC" and represent an area of roughly 100,000 people opposed to just Preston would hopefully mean a large fanbase - well potentially anyway. Between Easter Road and Berwick's Shielfield there is no league football club and I think the Edinburgh area is really missing another league side.

It has to be Spartans on all counts.
Facilities: they have far and away the best facilities which are in place and will be completed within the next couple of months.
Community: their community involvement is second to none, with a range of footballing sides covering all ages complemented by facilities that are extensively used by non-football groups.
Footbal: Last, but by no means least. They are multi trophy winners in their own league and have competed well year after year in the Scottish Cup.

Its just got to be Annan Athletic. I would like to see them replace Gretna so that I could go along and watch them. I dont want another Edinburgh area team or Cove Rangers ( far too far away) Come on Annan

Looking ahead, what if:
what happened to Gretna happens to this club, a meteoric rise up the league to the SPL. Which team would be able to support that kind of debt required as well as bring in the cash on a weekly basis? That is the better question. If they are content to stay SFL 3rd or 2nd division, then by all means any of the four. Which one has the most long term potential? Another Aberdeen side, or another Edinburgh side? Is the new Spartan stadium able to be renovated in 5 - 10 years time into a ground that would support the SPL? Can anyone else build a a stadium that will support and draw 10 to 25,000 fans regularly? I reckon we will find out over the next several years. I agree with those who call for structure at the lowest level. Relegation from the third and a playoff for the place that becomes vacant. Cheers. Off to see the American fireworks in Columbus, Ohio.

There should be two SPL leagues of 12/14 with the rest all playing in regional leagues under guidance from the SFA.
North, South, East and West Leagues all vying for promotion to SPL 2 via play-offs...

A pyramid system seems to be the route to go here, even the Welsh have a pyramid system. I can't see it happening myself, clubs in the SFL won't vote to make changes that will see them drop out of the SFL, East Stirlingshire comes to mind. Limiting clubs from making progres seems to be a theme throught Scottish football, the SPL is very restirctive.

I would go for something like a 16 team SFL with regional leagues under the SFL. Promotion from the SFL would need to be increased from the current 1 club. Clubs will only become stronger better clubs if there are rewards for their efforts, i.e. promotion.
