Woods the Enigma

US Open
comment on the article

Who would have thought that Tiger would be competing in the US Open let alone within one shot of the lead.

The guy is an enigma and is a shining example to all sports stars the world over. All younsters watch and learn.

Even if he fails to secure the title I have the greatest respect for his determination to compete when he has been out of competition for the last 2 months.

He is now proving that he the most consistent golfer of his generation and possibly in history.

If only some of the Europeans could emulate his focus, positive thought, fighting spirit and the refusal to be beaten they would be in contention for US majors on the last day.

Nontheless, after only 2 rounds I would single out Westwood, Donald, Jimenez and Wilson for their efforts thus far. However, the job is only half done and they need to show their colours by being in contention for the final battle over the back 9 on Sunday. It is important they do not fade away as happened in the Masters.

One guy will not fade away.

You can rest assured that the Tiger will be grimacing through the pain barrier to fight for this major.

I salute Tiger Woods as the greatest competitor EVER in the game of golf.

Ok I admit I said he should pull out citing he was not full fit and his knee was not 100%. However, i would like to draw attention to my prediction on immediate announcement that he was going to be paired with Phil and Scott.

The first thing that crossed my mind was uspga 2006 @ medinah. When Tiger was paired with Phil and Ogilvy. I thought the pairing was very similar and might be a good omen, yielding Tiger a very similar result. Also, being a player who has drawn comparisons with just about any golf legend. I thought this might be his Hoganesque – ala Hogan returning to win the US open in1950 after his accident. Many predicted back then, that he would just about make it after 2 rounds because he legs were too weak. Well look what a happened.

And it looks like it might very well be the case.

At Medinah 2006, he shot a 2nd round 68 to move to 2nd place. Exactly the same thing he did yesterday. He may very well end up playing the last group with another Brit (Westwood) just like he did with Donald. And yes he may also win by 5 strokes too.

Whatever the case, win or lose he has proved a good number of pundits wrong once again by being right up the leader board. For this reason alone I am happy smiley

Tiger's performance is remarkable.
But no surprise.

As for courageous comebacks after injury to Championship contention, it would be very hard to eclipse Ben Hogan's return following his car accident.

jpj, It would be very surprising if he played Buick in a fortnight as he's committed to do; may even miss his own event the following week.
