110m hurdles hotting up

comment on the article

All the focus for the 110m hurdles final in Beijing in August has been on China's Liu Xiang defending his Olympic title.

Liu has home advantage but it's not going to be as straightforward as some may think.

For a start he has the small matter of a nation of 1.3 billion people expecting him to win.

Then of course, there's the other athletes.

Take Cuba's Dayron Roble for example who has not so much upset the apple cart, but completely ransacked it and run off with the best fruit by eclipsing Liu's world record on Thursday by 0.01 seconds.

The new mark of 12.87 seconds clearly shocked Roble who said: "I did not expect that. Wow!"

But he has thrown down the gauntlet to Liu in the best possible style.

And add in the fact that Liu has been hampered by a sore hamstring and was disqualified for a false start in an event last week and you begin to wonder whether the pressure may be getting to China's great hope.

Who will triumph in Beijing?

Don't forget David Oliver, Anwar Moore and Ryan Wilson, three young Americans who have all run very low 13s races or 12.9s this or last year.

It's Robles' race to lose now the same way as it is Bolt's to lose in the 100m but this is a much more competitive field in an event that not only has many more factors to get right in a race but also an entire stadium of people behind Liu.

I predict it will be the best sprint race of the Olympics.

Terence Trammel is always in there with a shout don't forget. He will win a medal of some colour in Beijing I think.

Most of us on here are just observers these days, so I take my lead from Turner who knows a bit more than me about high hurdling. He predicted a couple of months back that the Cuban would win the gold in Beijing.

The 110m hurdles should make for an exciting race with Liu Xiang having the uneviable task of carrying the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. He will need a fair few preparatory races going into the Olympics but makes the suspense even more thrilling. Whether he can do a Cathy Freeman is to be seen but this particular event may well carry some sruprises. A few hurdles tipping over can open a whole can of worms and I'd hate to even predict any outcome for this event. Nonetheless, the more medals going to the Caribbean, the better I'll feel.
