Waiting for Beijing makes it sweeter

comment on the article
Katy Livingston

It's official - my name has been confirmed as one of the two female modern pentathletes who will represent Great Britain in Beijing, and I'm thrilled.

I was fairly safe after my bronze medal at the World Championships at the end of last month, but now I've received the official letter which says it's going to happen.

You get a letter which says "Congratulations, you've been selected," in a big Do Not Bend envelope, so they obviously expect people to frame it and that's exactly what I'll be doing.

Myself and Heather Fell, who is also going to Beijing, reached the qualifying standard very early on - at the first opportunity last year.

I never really felt safe until I crossed that finish line in Hungary, which secured my place at the Games
As the competitions went by we've been getting closer to knowing we were going to the Olympics, but until last week there was such a big opportunity for the others to snatch it at the last minute, at the World Championships.

I never really felt safe until I crossed that finish line in Hungary. I won a bronze medal in the individual event, which was a brilliant result and secured my place at the Games.

That was going through my head on the last lap of my run - I'm going to the Games. It was like winning two prizes instead of one.

Last time I wrote, I mentioned how big pentathlon is in Hungary. It turns out that was bigged up a little more than the reality, but it was still much better than a normal World Championship event in a different country.

My family have always wanted to come along, but they didn't dare book anything until it was official
There was a good crowd and it was really professionally run. We got asked for our autographs a couple of times even though the crowd wasn't as large as I was expecting, but apparently there was a horse event on in Budapest which drew some of the crowd away.

My shooting didn't go very well and I was down in 32nd place after that, but I had an amazing fence - something clicked on the day and I fenced a thousand points which propelled me up to 5th place. From there on I kept my position until the run, where I chased down the bronze medal position.

I've had to wait so long to know I'm going to Beijing, but that's made it a bit sweeter, I guess, and now I can plan my training and mentally prepare.

My family can start planning for Beijing as well. They have always wanted to come along but they didn't dare book anything until it was official.

The trip will be an expensive one but my dad would pay anything to go and watch me there - he's coming out with my mum, my sister, a couple of friends and my boyfriend, Ben, who's also a modern pentathlete.

It's the best celebrity treatment I've ever had - professional make-up artists adjusting my hair and powdering my nose
We've had a week off to recover from the World Championships. I spent a day this week doing a photo shoot for a glossy magazine, and I was loving that.

They glammed me up, put me in a designer dress and shoes, and did my hair and make-up, which was all very nice - I was treated like a celeb!

It's the best celebrity treatment I've ever had - professional make-up artists adjusting my hair and powdering my nose between every shot. I also had hair extensions put in, which I wanted to keep! Unfortunately they were only on loan for the few hours it took to complete the shoot, so I had to let them take them out.

It's back to work next week and once we're back in training on Monday, we should find out the plan for the lead-up to Beijing. We did a test event there last year and things seemed to go quite well.

I know I'm capable of medalling at the Games, especially after my performance at the World Championships. I'd be delighted with a medal but, with pentathlon, so many things can happen on the day.

Hopefully if I go there, do my best and enjoy it, I'll be on the podium.

Best of luck in Beijing Katy. It must be a fantastic feeling to know you'll be on that plane.

Also I have to agree with bushfighter - the real joy of the Olympics is finding out about the unsung stars (many of whom, like Katy are truly world class in thier sports) who otherwise we wouldn't really know much about.

Hi Katy, best of luck not only for Beijing but also London in 4 years time. I've never watched much Modern Pentathlon, it doesn't get the same coverage as things like the 100m even though we've got a good chance of medalling in the event. I look forward to hearing a bit more about it and seeing how you progress come the Olympics. All the best!

Katy, you look in great shape! After the Olympics perhaps we can meet at Burger King and I can pass on some sports nutrition tips! Good Luck.

I see from these comments that most users of this website are still only interested in attractive athletes. A shame they aren't also interested in the sport!

Good luck Katy!

I remember modern pentathlon. We won! Jim Fox - cheating Russian. Gosh, when was that?

(Gulp - just looked it up. 1976. Omigod.)

Great photo for the article:

"Blimey! A sword! How did that get there? And why am I in a cellar?"

Seriously, good luck; as a previous poster mentioned, every athlete in Beijing is deserving of our support, especially those engaged in the minority disciplines.

(Personally, though, I'm still not sure if bowls and the like really count as sports, but that's another thread I guess)
