US Open - Day One

US Open
comment on the article

Tiger Woods' knee is in for a scary amount of camera close-ups over the next 96 hours as TV cameras relay pictures from Torrey Pines to the watching millions around the world.

Welcome, golf lovers, to Day One of the US Open.

Despite not playing a competitive round for two months after surgery on his knee, world number one Woods - chasing his 14th major - starts as favourite for the 108th US Open.

No surprises there to be honest. In fact, can anyone remember the last time Woods didn't start as favourite at a major?

But, with the possibility that the supreme American may be somewhat ring rusty after admitting the knee is not yet fully healed, others will fancy their chances.

What is sure is that Torrey Pines, after being lengthened even further recently, will favour the long hitters.

Phil Mickelson could have the edge, having grown up playing the Californian course.

And, as ever, we must argue the case for that rarest of rare happenings: a European major win. Spain's Sergio Garcia and Ireland's Padraig Harrington are both in decent form, while Argentine Angel Cabrera is the defending champion.

I once was lucky enough to ask Tiger Woods a searching question. And now I have the pleasure of doing the same with you. So...

Will Woods shake of his injury to conquer all or not? Who are your outside bets to emerge triumphant come Sunday evening? Which players are best equipped to deal with the unique challenges of Torrey Pines?

Who is going to win the second major of 2008?

Let me know your thoughts throughout Day One. Bring it on...

kwini, I blame the Devlin, Bergstol, Benson threeball for the pace of play, a total of +38 between the three of them!

willy,
Even the first groups out took five hours; even slower tomorrow as they battle to make the cut.

"Alas American coverage of golf is not a patch on the beeb... tonight's coverage will consist of 90% discussion on how Tigers knee held up and a replay of every grimace he had during today's round..."

Alas, the beeb has no television coverage of the US Open and 90% of the online discussion will still consist of how well Tiger's knee held up (they will not be able to provide a replay of every grimace). This despite a licence fee, something NBC does not necessitate. And believe me, the BBC know where you live and it's all in the database: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=8ee_1210010683

Don't worry - everything is going to be fine with Garcia. I had a dream last night that he'd be five over after nine, but would get it back to two under by the end of the round.

I also dreamt that Tiger would be seven under through nine holes, and Mickelson six under, so don't take my word for it...

For the Irish guy Tom who said Harrington always flops in the majors and is all talk before them. He won the open last year in case you had not realised. He is also one of the few players in Europe who consistently contends at majors. Be grateful that one of our own is the only european major winner since 2000!!! he was also the top european finisher at the Masters this year in 5th place.

Such stupid comments like that really irritate me. Harrington has won 20 tournaments now around the world, a lot of pros would give anything for that level of success.

He may not be featuring this year but he has proved himself already winning a major!!!

Thank you slashermcguire I couldn't have said it better myself. Now the big question is how far back is too far back? I am assuming the the winning score is going to be at least a couple over par so though Padraig has given himself a very up hill battle if he can get in today with an under par round he would make the cut and after that well you just never know.

Before yesterdays round Tiger for me was still the man to beat, now despite him having a good round I really don't know if his knee is going to put up with 4 rounds. But never bet against a wounded tiger. I can just see Steve Williams giving him a piggy back up the 18th on Sunday.
