Tucker becomes world champion

comment on the article
Helen Tucker

Helen Tucker's world championship victory in Vancouver has been described as one of the greatest upsets in recent triathlon history.

Pre-race favourite Vanessa Fernandes could only muster a 10th place finish, leaving Tucker to do battle with the American Sarah Haskins.

The pair were pretty much neck and neck all the way but the Brit held on at the end in a sprint finish.

So what now for Tucker? She will go the Olympics full of confidence after this win, but can she bring back gold from Beijing?

Let's also not forget a brilliant win by Alistair Brownlee in the men's under 23 race.

Fantastic result!! Great sprint finish.. Also well done to alistair, great future ahead for him!! I actually saw the finish of helens race on the news which i was suprised at considering the lack of coverage usually!!

Good luck to all the brits at beijing, Im sure we have enough quality to come back with a medal!! But I think Vanessa fernandes will win the womens she not going to finish 10th again she has too much quality and the mens is wide open!!

Fantastic result. I'm so pleased that it has come good for you after all your problems. You did keep training though you couldn't run and this has been worth it all. Roll on Beijing. Thanks to Marc for all his support. you are a great pair biggrin

Brilliant achievement!!!

I had been following the races in Vancouver over the weekend, and initially got excited when I saw Helen's name at the top of the page, before realising it was an interim results page only showing the first hour of the race.

Then later of course, the actual result came up. Fantastic.

Congratulations to all medal winners over the weekend, including the age groupers in both the Olympic and Sprint distance events. Sorry to hear that the AG Olympic was morphed into a duathlon because of the weather. It must be a big disappointment to travel so far after gaining a spot to do a different format.

Whilst this is a great result and hats off to a storming performance the worlds are def overshadowed by the olympics this year - so whilst the field may have had names in, were they racing at their peak or just showing up for sponsors? Apologies for the nay saying but i just cant see past Fernandes for China. She has won everything else the sport can offer many times over

As far as i was aware, this had a baring on who would go to the olympics. Though this may have been for some of the lesser names.

MSEWT ok
