Germany make impressive start

Euro 2008 Germany
comment on the article

Germany have endured a nightmare run in European championships since Oliver Bierhoff's golden goal clinched the trophy against the Czech Republic at Wembley in Euro 96.

The World Cup has told a familiar tale of typically impressive German achievement, but the Euros have been a wasteland - now might be time for all that to change.

European football's superpowers are always keen to put down an early marker on this tournament, and Joachim Low's side followed Portugal's example in delivering an impressive opening statement of intent.

Poland may have presented feeble opposition, but Germany showed enough to suggest they could put the disappointments of the last two competitions behind them.

Lukas Podolski's two goals gave them a comfortable victory, and sterner tests will undoubtedly lie ahead.

But Germany looked like they were ready to justify the big budget backing they have had in a bid to ensure they were perfectly prepared for Euro 2008.

The German football association is reported to have plunged 20 million Euros into the campaign to ensure there are no repeats of recent failures.

Podolski was the spearhead of a lively front line, although the unselfish Miroslav Klose and the stuttering Mario Gomez must display a greater killer instinct in games to come.

And in midfield, Torsten Frings is a superb foil for Michael Ballack, the insurance policy that allows the German talisman to make his trademark forward surges with confidence.

It is in defence where Germany may suffer from close examination, apart from the excellent Philipp Lahm, who demonstrated exactly why has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League.

Per Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder looked like they could be vulnerable to greater pressure that Poland were able to apply, while Marcell Jansen made an uncertain opening to the tournament.

But coach Low will be well satisfied with this start and will hope it is simply the opening shot in a campaign that will bring the trophy back to Germany after 12 years.

What did you think of Germany's performance? Did they show signs of being a side ready to go the distance in Euro 2008?

Let us know your thoughts.

I don't wish to be rude, but if you don't want to read about the England team, why go on a UK- based forum?

It would be odd if people did not prefer to discuss their own team, especially when there has been so much to discuss.

Chazy77..not a joke, unlike the pundits I look at a football match beyond just the 10 second highlights. Poland led in possession (52-48%) shots on goal (8-6), off goal (6 -3) and tied corners. They led the pace, made more serious runs, JUST COULDN'T FINISH! Also, two offside mistakes by the officials were a SHAME. It's also a shame Poland didn't shoot accurately once or twice , otherwise the headlines would be more representative of the ACTUAL game. Not an impressive performance by Germany, no matter what the score was. Lucky bounce off of Klose right to Poldi? Come on. Again, what a joke. And not a huge England fan mate. US actually. (How about Howard best keeper in football in the 0-0 draw vs. Argentina -and YES, Messi played.)

I know, you would rather see your homecountry in this competition, tough luck, as they are real rubbish just now. And hey, you should also know that Germany usually gets better as the tournament progresses, so, don't be impatient he he he

Huntbridge, you may join Linecker and Alan Shearer, who both loath the German team, sadly for you, England are mince and the germans will get better as the tournament unfolds, just keep you jealous eyes on the screen, if you acn bare watching it that is he he

Dont forget that had Poland scored, it would have meant the germans had raised their game....Poland woould have been cannon fodder then, instead, a 2-0 was sufficient to see off Poland....remember, the germans know they will progress and are being economical with their fitness...as they want to go the distance and not huffing and puffing after two matches. Trust me, they will raise their game.....

Klita,

I would rephrase that 'Cannon Fodder' remark about the Poles if I were you...

HA! Check out the Croatia/Germany score right now. 2-0. Germany exposed, like they easily could have been against Poland. Like I said.

Look for Poland to strike fast against Austria 3-1 (Smolarek and Guerrero), draw or 2-1 against Croatia for a surprise advance on goal differential with Germany an early out...You heard it here first..

huntbridge,

I wouldn't say Germany exposed, Croatia were just good- the English already knew that- they were even better with Eduardo!

Hope Poland do win and it will be an exciting 3 way contest in that group.

What does everyone think about the red?

The Croat player overacted, I feel a bit sorry for Schweini, it was handbags really.

On the other hand, Modric's booking at the end was also a joke, he won the ball fairly and would prob have scored.
