Were Tyrone lucky to survive?

comment on the article

Holders Tyrone are still in the 2008 Ulster Football Championship - but only just.

Mickey Harte's men survived a massive scare against underdogs Down at Healy Park but the teams ended on 2-8 each and so will replay at Newry on Saturday.

Tyrone stormed into an early commnading lead with goals from Colm McCullagh and Sean Cavanagh.

But it certainly was not a case of Down and out as Ross Carr's team hit back with goals from Benny Coulter and Ambrose Rodgers.

They even had a goal by man-of-the-match Dan Gordon disallowed.

So, have Down missed a great chance to dump Tyrone out of the Ulster Championship?

Or do you feel they can finish the job in the second meeting at Pairc Esler?

And, on this showing, have Tyrone got what it takes to trouble the likes of Kerry and Dublin in the All-Ireland?

If the definition of man of the match is the person who exerts most influence on a game my nomination would have to be David Coldrick. Some appalling decisions and a lack of consistency. Not what is to be expected of referees at this level. He'll be popular amongst the GAA top brass though after playing for the draw.

Tyrone seemed to be very complacent yesterday. They only managed to score 4 points in the second half- I doubt Kerry/Dublin et al will be losing any sleep over this over-hyped Tyrone side.

Down know they have nothing to fear from Tyrone: indeed they were a dodgy referee's decision away from dumping them out of Ulster. This young Down team will have gained a lot of confidence from yesterday. Hopefully on Saturday they can make it count.

agree with mossgreen a pattern seems to be emerging with tyrone - early blitzkrieg where they look sensational and then they flatten out hanging on late in the game. This has to be a worry. Maybe this season it is first time out syndrom and that game may bring them on. Very interested to see how they perform in the replay. I would not rule them out of anything however as they still have a lot of class players and more to return to the side including mulgrew and mulligan.

As a Down fan I fear, as in 2003, we may have missed our chance to beat Tyrone the first day out and will get beat in the replay. But I really hope i'm wrong.

Sounessdie should get behind the management instead of putting them down, or at least inform us as to why he feels this way!

down will have learnt their lesson from 2003 and i can see them winning the replay if carr picks the right team.

as a down supporter i hope we havnt missed our chance, but as history shows we dont fair well in replays against tyrone, i think that we had a chance 2 win it but the ref bottled it, its best to use Rodgers and McComiskey as inpact subs cause they can turn a match but i think big packie downey would do well against tyrone,
not forgettin this is ulster champions that down near robbed a result

I said before the match that if Tyrone didn't beat Down by 5 points or more, that result would be worse than Meath's defeat to Wexford. They got out of jail, and I can't say for certain that they'll stuff Down in the replay. It does honestly look like the Tyrone/Down/Armagh/Cavan side of the Ulster Championship is weaker than the Derry/Fermanagh side, and that is a surprise for me to say (even though I did think Derry would win Ulster)

Maybe if Down had concentrated on playing football instead of taking cheap shots off the ball at every opportunity they might have won. As it was they were a disgrace to the fine footballing traditions of the county and should be ashamed of themselves.

I dont recall too many people saying Tyrone would do much this summer so how they can be overhyped I do not know.

Better finishing from Tyrone in the first half and Down would have been on the end of a humiliation. Luckily for them the ref was happy for them to roam around the pitch battering any Tyrone player who came within reach.

Were you watching the same game as the rest of us?!

I have spoken to a number of Tyrone friends who concede the referee gave the majority of 50/50 decisions Tyrone's way. Please clarify which "batterings" you are referring to? If it is the Davy Harte incident Martin Cole has been suspended even though the referee felt it merited only a yellow card. I was always of the opinion that if the referee saw a foul and dealt with it as he saw fit that was the end of the matter.

I note you don't mention how Tyrone used 6 subs instead of the allowed maximum of five. I don't see the GAA doing anything about that.
