Did Ireland miss their big chance?

International Ireland
comment on the article

Not for the first time, Ireland threatened to beat New Zealand but, ultimately, they fell short.

Many believed the terrible weather in Wellington might play into Ireland's hands against the under-pressure All Blacks.

But Graham Henry's home side desperately needed the win in their first Test since the World Cup disappointment.

Ireland led on a couple of occasions in the first half but some errors in the second period proved costly and the Kiwis ran out 21-11 winners.

Did the Irish miss out on a golden opportunity to at last get the better of the All Blacks?

Was it a good Irish performance?

And can New Zealand be satisfied with their display?

Re ruckingoodrugger - Can you actually express yourself without turning into a big girl? Munster don`t have all this money that ure dreaming about but they do have bottle, unlike this current Irish side which are very inconsistent.
You talk about pinching players...who are you kidding? - you guys grab any Tongan or Samoan who is worth his salt and slap a NZ jersey on his back before he has time to say sheep.
When I mentioned Marcus Horan, I wasn`t referring to the penalty he gave away (which was bad enough) I was referring to the fact that he is out of his depth at this level and it`s a massive problem area for Irish rugby.
Fair play to NZ today thay were by far the better side and will only improve. And your fans are generally very gracious unlike the Ozzies - Of course you`ll always get a few whingers like ruckingoodrugger, but thats life.

Ireland weren't in the game- look at territory and posseion stats.
Why doe NZ always have to endure English refereees who must be the worst in the world- look at the performance of the pasty pom Barns in the Cardiff game (how can you miss a 5 metre forward pass?) and this podgy pom last night who didn't know what a knock on was. Roll on other countries refs, even frenchmen, I say.

Walgert, how can you say Ireland had no chance of winning, it was level until midway through the 2nd half. And you must admit that Carter was utter crap, and O' Gara was the better no 10.
Also, you seem like an arrogant so and so, I'm glad yee did'nt win the world cup, can't imagine what yee would be like then.

Too many posters are of the opinion that it was a brave defeat to a far better side. This defeatism and typifies the NH attitude - hopefully not that of the players but perhaps.
Until we go down there EXPECTING to win then we will continue to loose.
There are of course excuses, reasons etc but AB's were ordinary yesterday (perhaps partly with the weather levelling things) but they were emminently beatable. Yet they won - maybe because they could never accept defeat (look at all the winging and brow beating after WC)
Sadly for me as an Englishman they cannot play as badly next week.

In appalling conditions, both sides competed well. The All Blacks were rusty, and very much a scratch side.Carter had a mare[to be honest he has been indiffent by his standards since injury in RWC and in S14 ].The forwards were immense, lineout[a supposed weakness ] .The whinging about laws old or new matter not a jot, if not applied.Collapsing the scrum is dangerous, and illegal.A scrum prior to the Irish try [they pulled it down 4 times in succession] on another day they would have penalised. The All Blacks made and executed 3 line breaks,2 tries and a knock on under the posts. The side for England will be alot stronger, and TRi _nations.In good conditions expect a Home win.

There have been a number of interesting points raised here and I thought I'd add my tuppence worth.

The stats of the game have been used to back up many arguments but as Maggie Thatcher once said "there are lies, there are damnable and then there are statistics". Ireland spent most of the first 60 minutes level with or ahead of New Zealand and this fact must be combined with the stats, if any true picture is to be had. Clearly, whilst NZ had most of the ball, they weren't being efficient with it during that time. You can make as many impressive attacks as you like but if you're not scoring and the other side are, well...

On the subject of referees, yes England has her fair share of crap ones but let us not forget the likes of Paddy O'Brien and Steve Walsh, both of whom are the epitome of inconsistant and crap refereeing. As for Wayne Barnes, get over it, if NZ were good enough to win THAT try would not have mattered. Also, the referee is not alone on the pitch and it is entirely understandable that he cannot see everything. What you should be asking yourselves is how the two touch judges also missed THAT pass! All that said, having seen the way Chris White refereed the Ireland v France game in the World Cup, I cannot help but think that there was a certain partisanship where the French were concerned. Yes Ireland would almost certainly have lost the game but Chris White playing for the French made sure they did and how.

The debate about who was the best number ten is a bit schoolyardy but can anyone seriously and honestly suggest that Dan Carter had a good game on Saturday? Similarly, can anyone seriously and honestly say that Ronan O'Gara had a really bad game on Saturday? It's time to put nationality aside and look at the game chaps!
