Another year for Paolo!

European Football AC Milan
comment on the article

AC Milan communicate that Captain Paolo Maldini's contract has been extended to 30 June 2009!
Why do players do this to themselves?Paolo Maldini absolute legend of Italian,European and world football,7 Serie A titles,1 Coppa Italia,5 Super Coppas,5 Champions League titles,5 Uefa Super Cups,3 Intercontinental Cups, a record 126 caps for Italy and 617 matches in Serie A for Milan.
All that and he still doesn't know when to quit!I understand the motivation another scudetto and possibly a tilt at the UEFA cup might bring but he is going to be 41 next year.I feel an extra year either at left back or central defence will deny another player the chance to get a year's consistent play under his belt because obviously whenever Paolo is fit he must play.
I really hope it doesnt end in tears.I will always remember that awful day in the 96/97 season where a young Christian Vieri and a rampant Juve side came to the San siro and tore Milan to bits winning 6-1 with 'Bobo' giving the great Franco Baresi an absolute nightmare.
Really hope it does not end that way

Maldini's still a top class defender, and probably the best ever in his position. Paolo can still handle himself and I would be very surprised to see him torn apart. His reading of the game and timing of tackles is second to none. His is a great professional and an inspiration, and this is coming from an Inter fan!

call me crazy, but i think anchelottis reluctance to rebuild that squad could mean ac milan sliding down the positions. maldini was a great defender, btu he gave away important goals last year, and in the championsl eague they got taken apart twice by arsenal and were lucky not to get royally hammered

Maldini has so much experience to offer his beloved Milan team that it would be beneficial to the youngsters to show them what they have to do to be a Milan player.

Maldini may not have the legs of 10 years ago, however, his tactical knowledge and know-how is still good enough to cover his lack of pace.

Maldini can still play in big tournaments and I remember against Arsenal, he still oozed class.

True Legend and I hope he can become Fifa's next president.

Take a bow Paolo my son!

I couldn't be a bigger fan of Maldini, at his best he was imperious beyond mere mortal footballers and he has remained top class a good 4-5 years beyond average.

But he is at the end of the day a mere mortal, and he must face the same level of judgement as everyone else.

This season he looked slow to the point of being a complete liability, beaten on pace by literally everyone. I'm aware pace is not to be expected of a 40 year old, but he just looks unfit at times. His control on the ball isn't a fraction of what it was with him needing a visably longer amount of time to control and distrbute the ball. His passing has lost accuracy and his tackling has none of the panache it used to making him a severe penalty risk.

This decline has been sudden. 12 months ago I would marvel about him still looking so good at 39, but he has hit the age wall running this season and been found seriouly wanting.

I don't for a second doubt that he can still play professional football, but not in Serie A, never mind a club playing European football.

If he plays this season he will be cruxified by average players and ridiculed on the pitch by quality opposition. This extra season seems to smack of sentiment rather than sense, what is he trying to achieve?

I only hope this is a season to establish him as a coach whilst keeping him registered as a player purely on the offchance there's some injury crisis or they want to rest top players in meaningless cup and uefa group games.

maldini is an inspiration to ac milan when he plays and him playing for another season makes the fans and the dressing room much happier so why not.
he is defiantly not playing for the money and it isn't unfair on other players as he does not play ever game even when he is fit, during the 05-06 season he spent most of the time as a substitute as serginho and kaladze had the majority season taking his place in the starting line up.
